Joey is a gentle, bright little boy whose presence brings warmth to everyone around him. Right now, though, his days look very different from what any child’s should. He is facing a serious medical journey, and his doctors have told his family that a lung transplant is the path that can give him a chance to grow, heal, and live a fuller life.

Joey’s story began to change last August during what was expected to be a routine medical check-up. Doctors noticed unusual levels of protein in his urine, which led to further testing. Those tests revealed a rare genetic kidney condition — something no family is ever prepared to hear. From that moment on, life became a series of hospital visits, tests, and difficult conversations.

As his body worked to cope with this condition, Joey’s immune system became weaker. Over time, he developed serious infections, including RSV and norovirus. These infections placed extra strain on his lungs and overall health, making recovery even more difficult. Despite the best care and treatment, his condition progressed to the point where advanced life support became necessary.

Today, Joey is supported by an ECMO machine, which is helping his heart and lungs do the work his body cannot manage on its own right now. This support gives him time — time for his doctors to care for him, time for his body to rest, and time for his family to hold on to hope.

After careful evaluation, Joey’s medical team has shared that a lung transplant in the UK offers him the best chance forward. This journey involves specialized surgery, organ coordination, travel, and extended medical care, all of which come with significant challenges for his family.

Through everything, Joey’s parents remain by his side, taking each day as it comes. They celebrate the small moments, lean on one another, and continue to believe in the possibility of better days ahead.
