After I graduated I wanted to give back to people that are less fortunate than I am, so I decided to go to Kenya and volunteer at a school. I was put in Brightstar School in the Riruta slums; it is severely underfunded and is made out of tin sheets. Brightstar has 5 class rooms and the school kids range from 3 to 14 years old. It serves just under 100 students, all of whom come from very low income families who cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or even a daily meal. So it is very important that Brightstar is a safe haven for children and for some it’s their only meal of the day. It’s heartbreaking to see kids that are so talented not reach their full potential because of socio-economic factors.
This trip has transformed my view of life because I’ve seen that the people with the least amount of materialistic things are the most resourceful and happiest children. They would write me note and always greet me a smile or a hug.
That’s why I would love to raise some money to support the school and so am asking anyone who can to sponsor me running a Scottish Half Marathon in October. Even a small donation goes a very long way, so please give whatever you can.
