Seventy children need our urgent help.
The Crisis: Bright Horizons Pre-K in Jamaica has served families faithfully for nearly 19 years, graduating students who read above grade level. Hurricane Melissa destroyed everything. Today, these children aged 2-5 sit in classrooms without electricity, learning by window light. Their playground was hauled away as scrap metal. One teacher is homeless, staying with another family. Another has no power at home but still shows up to teach. The mental health team told me they're too traumatized to help anyone—they need healing first.
How This Started: Dr. Tiffany McBean, the school's administrator, contacted me after reading my article about Hurricane Melissa. When she sent photos of children learning in darkness and told me about her homeless teacher still showing up, I knew I had to act.
The Complete Recovery Plan: Working with Dr. McBean, we've developed a comprehensive recovery plan. But we can't wait to address every need—children require help NOW. So we're starting with the most urgent needs.

Phase 1 focuses on trauma support, resources for teachers, and urgent needs for students and staff.
Phases 2 & 3 (Ongoing Recovery & Transformation) will cover additional training, expanded therapy equipment, further curriculum development, and long-term support for the school community. We’ll share a detailed breakdown for Phases 2 and 3 after we reach our Phase 1 goal.

Why December Action Can't Wait: The mental health team needs healing this month—December—to support teachers and parents in January. Teachers need resources by January to start tier 1 student trauma support with the mental health team. Children are in school today without support. Roads are still unpassable, hotels are closed for remodeling, and recovery efforts for basic needs like electricity and food are ongoing. That’s why we’re focusing on virtual supports now, with in-person training planned for June and future site visits in 2026 for implementation support, data analysis, and strategic planning with the Early Childhood team.
My Commitment: I'm discounting all professional services and donating additional support across the full program. As part of reMINDed's pro bono commitment, we're contributing significant professional services to this disaster recovery effort. I will document every dollar, share updates regularly, and show you exactly how your donation makes a difference.
Full Transparency: This is Phase 1 of three phases, each building toward full recovery and transformation. Today, we focus on Phase 1 because children can't wait.
About the School: Bright Horizons has spent nearly 19 years educating our earliest learners, sending them off to primary school as confident and competent learners and readers. They shouldn't end with a removal truck hauling away their playground. Not when teachers are still showing up. Not when children are still learning. Not when there's still hope.
Join Us: Will you help turn this crisis into recovery? Every donation—no matter the size—brings light to children learning in darkness. Dr. McBean and her team aren't giving up. Neither should we.
