Help Brett and His Family: A Journey Through Fighting Lung Cancer
In times of crisis, the strength of community support shines through. It's the lifeline that can turn a dire situation into one filled with hope and solidarity. This is not a sprint, but a marathon.
Brett is facing a battle and him and his family need our support. Brett has a wife, Desi, of 10 1/2 years and a 6 year old son, Roman. If you know Brett, he is the guy that checks in on everyone. He is there for anyone, no questions asked and he expresses his love every SECOND that he gets. He truly is a special human being that has been there for us all over the years and he needs us. Although this is a very scary diagnosis, the doctors did say that it is curable. He will be undergoing a very aggressive chemotherapy plan and headed to Chicago, but Brett is stubborn and strong, the best kind of combo. With that being said, Brett will be off of work indefinitely until he has fought his way through this battle and back to health.
Brett's Story
The Diagnosis
Stage IV - Lung Cancer. Brett started experiencing flu like symptoms for about a month, which turned into lung pain and shortness of breath. After the routine checks, they decided to do a CT scan. Brett received news that he had a 6.1 cm mass on his right lower lung. The diagnosis has been overwhelming.
The Journey
Our dear friend/family member is attacking this with a positive mindset, as that is half the battle. Brett will start chemo in about 2 weeks. His chemo treatment will consist of; 3 chemo treatments per week and then 3 weeks off in between each round, for a total of 5 rounds. Brett will be out of work for a minimum of 5-6 months. Again, the doctors did say that this is treatable and curable, so the fight is on. His path forward is a daunting one; it's lined with appointments, treatments, and the hope for a brighter, healthier future.
How You Can Help
Supporting a Loved One
Anything you can do to help is help. If all you have is a $1 or $5 that still helps. Muskegon County has spoke when Brett delivered the news. He has SO MANY wonderful people rooting for him. Although Brett has an army behind him, it doesn't take away the concern about the financial burden this will create. I promised him, we will all figure it out together. So I am asking and I will be continuously asking for help for as long as I need to for his family! If 500 people donated $30, we can easily get to our goal! That is $6 a month per person for the next 5 months. Brett and his family are grateful for anything you can do.
The Go Fund Me
This Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to provide a centralized hub for financial assistance on a more immediate need. Every donation, no matter the size, is helpful in ensuring that Brett's medical expenses and family necessities are met.
Buying or Selling a Home?
As many of you know, Brett became a Realtor last year. He has been crushing the game of real estate and many of you have spoke about using him when the time comes. Brett is my friend from school of 20+ years, he works with me at my Brokerage, Realtors In Michigan. We will be covering for Brett during this time and the plan is to hire an agent to assist with any sales, so he can focus on his health, but also keep things moving for him. Brett will be receiving commissions still, from any business you guys send our way on behalf of him. This will be an additional huge help to his family in covering costs or the longevity of treatment, he may need to receive. You can message me directly through Facebook - Chollie Houghtaling or Go Fund Me (Go Fund Me won't allow me to post my contact info), if you ever have any real estate needs and you would like for him to receive a large donation on your behalf. We've got you covered and we've got him covered!
Sharing the Journey
PLEASE SHARE HIS STORY! While financial contributions are crucial, we recognize not everyone has the means to donate. If you would like to help, we could use your helps spreading the word, allowing more individuals to participate in this act of compassion if they have something they would like to give.
