Help Brent Recover and Get Back to His Dogs (and all of us, too)

What happened:

On Tuesday, October 9th my friend and former partner Brent Ediger was found unresponsive and severely injured at his home. We don’t know how he was injured and police are investigating. Last known activity was Oct 3rd. Anyone with information please direct message me. Brent and I have remained close and have been friends for 34 years. We legally established me as his Durable Power of Attorney year’s ago and we recently discussed that he still wanted me to in a recent conversation. Many of you have asked Kristopher and I for updates. Here is a summary and update on his condition and progress: On October 9th when he arrived at the hospital he was in bad shape and fighting for his life. He suffered from a fractured skull, nose, rib and multiple bruises. After he sustained his injuries he may have been incapacitated and did not receive immediate care, which resulted in damaged kidneys and decreased oxygen to his brain. Once found, He spent 6 days in ICU and has Improved medically and is now in a normal hospital room. The kidneys are back to normal. He has a traumatic brain injury affecting his motor skills (he currently only has use of his left arm and has involuntary movement of his left leg). He also lost his language and communication skills and will need to relearn them. He will need acute care at a brain injury facility and was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, NE, on Tuesday, 23rd. At this point we are hopeful but he has a long road ahead of him.

Brent's treatment:
Currently Brent is medically stable but that does not tell the complete story.  As mentioned above he has many challenges with movement and communication.  He can't walk and is not able to communicate.  Brent's best chance of recovery starts with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Madonna is widely considered one of the top brain injury rehabilitation hospitals in the country.  His  rehabilitation will include Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy.  Right now our goal is for a full recovery and for him to live independently again.  I will update this section as he progresses.

What will your donations be used for:
Because he is self-employed, he has no income while he recovers to pay for expenses, co-pays (his out of pocket maximum of $7300 per year), we currently don't know what expenses will be billed from his ICU stay.  He also has daily/monthly expenses that include car insurance (still needed even though he is not driving a car), rent until the end of his lease in a few months, phone etc .

Other ways you can help:
Please donate! You can visit and of course cards and letters are welcome.  If there are other ways to help Brent, we will let you know, soon.  For instance, his two dogs Ruff and Cora are currently being fostered by friends.

Brent's stay at Madonna is critical to the best chance at a full recovery for him. Currently, they have said it could be six months to two years or more. When he is farther along in his treatment, we are hoping to close that gap.
