On May 19, my mom, Brenda Kiger, lost her fight with Parkinson's disease after a 15-year battle. Now, my dad and my sister, who are both disabled and were her primary caregivers, are trying to pick up the pieces and move forward with their lives.
Unfortunately, they were fully dependent on mom's social security disability checks, which they will no longer receive. We got the notice yesterday that his income would be cut in half to $1,500 total a month for both him and my sister. This has put them in a pretty severe financial bind because bills don't stop even when death comes.
Our family has done what we can to help, but the need is still great. Dad is no longer able to work due to serious health conditions, and Tiffany is in the process of getting her disability status approved – but our experience says that it will take quite a bit of time, possibly more than a year, for that to be reviewed and approved.
So, I'm reaching out to family, friends, and any kind and benevolent folks who would be willing to help in this time of need.
The ultimate goal I've set is $16,000. This would allow them to pay off the remainder of their mortgage and allow Dad to stay in the home he's lived in for the past 40 years. I know that having this assurance would significantly reduce my dad's stress.
They will then be able to use his income to continue covering their daily living expenses.
Whatever we receive is a blessing and will be met with gratitude. It will be well used to cover their expenses and ease some of the financial pain incurred by this great loss.
Thank you for anything you can contribute. We are truly grateful.
All the best,
Brandy
