My name is Brenda, and I’m a disabled veteran living in Troutdale, Oregon. I rely on my 2010 Dodge minivan, affectionately called the “Beast,” for all my daily needs. Without accessible public transportation nearby, my van is my only way to get to medical appointments, run errands, and stay connected to my community. My walker, the “Beastette,” rides with me everywhere, and the van’s stow n go seats make it possible for me to adapt the space as needed for my mobility and comfort.
I haven’t been able to work for several years due to a sleep disorder that makes a consistent schedule impossible, and severe PTSD that makes being in public very challenging. Having my own vehicle allows me to minimize time spent in stressful environments and helps me maintain my independence. The “Beast” is more than just transportation—it’s my lifeline to the outside world and to the people who matter most to me.
This van was purchased with my inheritance from my dad, and it’s become a symbol of my independence. Every year, I look forward to spending Christmas with close friends in Washington State, who are like family to me. Without the van, I’d have to give up this important tradition. Right now, I’m struggling to cover the costs of registration, a DEQ inspection, and new all-weather tires to keep the van safe for winter. Any support will help me stay on the road, maintain my independence, and keep my connection to my loved ones.
