My name is Bree, and I’m currently in the hospital. I came in after not feeling well through the weekend, expecting a quick one-day infusion and discharge—but what was supposed to be a short visit turned into a full five-day stay with daily infusions.

I live with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects muscle strength and movement. I was diagnosed when I was 14 years old, and now at 29, I’ve learned to live with it the best I can. Most people (about 80%) have generalized MG, but I fall into the special 20%—the unpredictable kind that makes treatment more complex.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been stable and managing my condition well—but recently, I started noticing changes. My health slowly began to decline. I lost my ability to smile and raise my eyebrows, and my voice became hoarse and nasally as the flare worsened. I grew so fatigued that I was sleeping all day and still waking up exhausted. That’s when I knew it was time to come to the hospital.

What I thought would be a simple infusion turned into a week-long stay focused on getting my body back on track. I didn’t plan to be here this long and wasn’t prepared for the time off. Because of this, I’ve missed a lot of work and have no sick pay left. I’m the sole provider for myself, and between lost income and everyday bills, things are going to get overwhelming once I return home.
