Hi guys, my name is Breann. I am a content creator, single mother of two, and I’m just trying to make a way. I’m breaking boundaries every single day.
Unfortunately, last month on my small son’s birthday, April 14, our house flooded! The flood was from a small piece on the toilet in the upstairs unit of my home. Our home is a two-family unit. Our landlord has turned the third floor into his own personal office for his LLC.
Around 5 AM on April 14, our world came crashing down! My boyfriend had gotten up to get ready for work as he leaves around 5:30 every morning. He called me, and I heard a curdling scream. He said, "Babe, hurry up."
I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and hurried up. When I arrived in the living room, all you could hear was raindrops. It sounded like torrential rain. Initially, we were just trying to figure out where it was coming from, but within moments we did as water started pouring out of our ceiling.
Pouring through the light fixtures, the sockets, and the fire and smoke detectors.
Soaking our furniture, raining in our living room, raining in our house!
We called our landlord at least six or seven times before he finally answered. We let him know that there was a leak in the upstairs apartment. My boyfriend had tried everything, even went upstairs to try to check the door to see if he could get in to turn the water off. He could not; the door was locked naturally.
My boyfriend then asked the landlord, "Where is the water valve? How can we turn it off?" My boyfriend tried to go down to the basement, but the basement hallway is so cluttered with my landlord's miscellaneous items that he could not even reach or locate the boiler or the water valve shut-off.
The landlord took another 25 minutes to get here and didn’t arrive until approximately 6:15 AM.
At this time, our house and most of our belongings were destroyed! That same day, we paid our landlord the rent in good faith because I pay my rent on the 15th of every month!
He took our money and never fixed anything. He kept telling us when we would call that he was fixing the problem. One day would go by, two days would go by, and it finally went into almost two months. This month, I asked him about an Airbnb and putting our rent money in escrow. As soon as I asked him that, immediately a few days later, I was served with a warrant of removal.
When I asked my landlord if the insurance was going to cover the damage or what was going on with the insurance company, he danced around in circles and finally told me and confessed that he either had a lapse in insurance or they would not cover him at all for anything.
Now let me give you a little side story. The inspector for Allstate did not come to our house until about 3 1/2 weeks after the flood. Now, I’m not sure what the standard turnaround time is, but I would imagine that that’s not it.
In the last almost 2 months, my furniture has grown mold. My house smells like a basement, and there are mold spores in the air. My landlord does not have the money to put us in an Airbnb, which is why he’s trying to remove us from the property. He doesn’t have money to even repair this living room and to do the mold remediation.
The day that the flood happened, my landlord told me to take my regular house fan and point it towards the wall. The windows in my house have a 2-inch gap between them from dry rotting out of the wall. One day, my son was sitting on the couch, and the whole window fell out.
I had asked my landlord on numerous occasions to fix these things, and he refused. This month, I finally was fed up, and when I asked him to put our money in escrow, that really bothered him. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, we had a warrant of removal. When I asked my landlord about it, he said he knew nothing about it, which was a lie. How do you not know about it? I asked him if he spoke to his lawyer about putting our rent in escrow, and he said he would take care of it. I said, "What exactly is your lawyer taking care of?"
Exactly, he never spoke to his lawyer. He just told his lawyer that we didn’t pay the rent for the month of June, which is a lie. We have the money. He cannot afford to fix my apartment, which is why it has been like this for two months. Every time I ask him when the apartment is getting fixed, he starts stuttering and talking in circles. I’m not really sure what else to do, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Just to be clear, I only made this because some of my supporters asked me to.
I am a person that gets it out of the mud. I don’t ask for handouts, and I try to be resourceful. At this time, any little bit helps. We are going to be suing my landlord for emotional distress, mold exposure, breach of contract, and several other things along the way. As you guys can see, you can follow my journey on TikTok at BRETHEEXPERIENCE.
Right now, any little bit helps with the transition as I would like to take the next week off from my new job that I started so that I can try to pack my house up and figure things out. We are going to get a letter of stay, and we’re even gonna win, but the problem is the property is uninhabitable, which means we still need to find accommodation swiftly. I will be awarded my security deposit, I’m sure, and several other things, but there may be a waiting period. The mold is everywhere! I don’t know if you’ve ever dealt with mold. This is my first time knowingly dealing with mold. This has been a horrible situation, and I don’t wish this on anybody.
The funds donated will go swiftly towards our moving arrangements and our accommodation as I’m trying to do a swift move into an apartment. I have viewed 10 apartments this week. We do have a little bit of money saved up, but every little bit counts, as well as this month’s rent. I just want to say thank you so much.
