Brayan Morales is 26 years old. He's a cherished member of the Skid Row Running Club and a true inspiration to everyone who knows him. Despite losing a leg years ago, Brayan found his freedom and peace through cycling and surfing. Even though he cannot run, he is at every club event, reminding us that our community is about one thing: making everyone feel included. To us, Brayan isn't just a member; he is family.
The LAPD Christmas Ride & A Remarkable Discovery: Recently, Brayan was participating in the LAPD Christmas Bike Ride. He was biking with such speed and skill that the LAPD officers on the ride were absolutely amazed that he was doing it all with only one leg. They were so moved by his talent that they began discussing how they could use their connections to help Brayan enter the Paralympics and secure a professional cycling prosthetic.
Tragically, later during that same event, Brayan was involved in a serious accident. The fall caused significant physical trauma to his residual limb, hip, shoulder, and elbow, leading to two major surgeries. Because of the nature of the injury and the healing process, Brayan is currently hospitalized and unable to wear his prosthetic leg.
Overcoming Isolation: This accident happened at a major turning point in Brayan's life. He recently moved into his first apartment, but it is currently empty. Because the space isn't fully furnished and he feels isolated there, Brayan has been returning to the Midnight Mission just to be around people. Our goal is to make his new apartment a safe, comfortable home so he doesn't have to go back to the Mission for that feeling and can focus entirely on his recovery.
Why We Are Raising $10,000: Brayan does not have family in the US and is currently without income. While he is a part of a few assistance programs that will help with costs, these resources often take months to kick in and do not cover everything. We are stepping in now to provide a "Recovery Bridge" so Brayan doesn't fall through the cracks while waiting for those programs to start.
Your donations will go directly toward:
- Immediate Financial Stability: Covering food, utilities, and basic living expenses for the next several months while Brayan is unable to work.
- Medical Transportation: Ensuring he can get to and from Kaiser therapy sessions and doctor appointments safely while he cannot use his leg.
- A Move-In Ready Home: Furnishing his apartment with the essentials so he can recover with dignity in a space that is safe and accessible.
- The Road to the Paralympics: Keeping him stable and healthy so that once his limb is healed, he can work with the LAPD's connections to pursue his Paralympic dream.
A Note of Thanks: Brayan has spent so much time being the heart of our community. Now, it’s our turn to be his legs. We are keeping certain medical details private to respect his dignity, but please know that every dollar helps this resilient man get back on track and back on his bike.
Thank you for helping us bring Brayan home to a place where he can truly heal.
