Her story: In Kenya, I endured my stepmother's daily beatings, teen pregnancy, the father's abandonment of me, and my clan's attempt to force me into female genital mutilation and an arranged marriage. In Brazil, I survived in slums where I was raped at midnight while my children watched, and contracted HIV. We fled to the US, and I was raped again on our journey. I am very sad when I think about what happened to me, but I pray my children can have better lives in America.
