Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
My name is Alliyah Moakan, and I’m writing on behalf of my aunt, Leita Kumar, to share the story of her courageous son, John Paul Kumar—a bright and energetic 8-year-old from Guyana, South America.
On February 6, 2025, our lives were changed forever when John Paul was diagnosed with High-Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)—a serious and aggressive form of blood cancer.
A Family in Crisis
Since his diagnosis, John Paul has spent countless days in the hospital, including a stay in the ICU. Every day has been an emotional rollercoaster of procedures, waiting, and uncertainty. Yet, through it all, John Paul has remained a true warrior. Even in pain, he rarely complains. One of his doctors once said:
“John is the kind of child who makes our work easier because of his strength and positivity.”
A Race Against Time
Our greatest hope was to transfer John Paul to the United States for advanced treatment. We applied to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the best in the world, but on April 18, we received devastating news: his application was declined.
With no time to spare, we began chemotherapy in Guyana. So far, John Paul has bravely endured:
- Two spinal taps (lumbar punctures)
- One blood transfusion
- Chemotherapy (delivered through spinal injection)
As of May 12, 2025, John Paul is unconscious, no longer recognizing loved ones, and unable to eat. Doctors are running urgent tests to determine if these symptoms are side effects of chemo or something more. His white blood cell levels are dangerously low, and he is now receiving platelet transfusions.
The Road Ahead
John Paul has a long, difficult journey ahead. His treatment will continue for at least three years, during which he will be immunocompromised—requiring around-the-clock care and significant lifestyle changes to keep him safe.
We are a single-income family, doing all we can to support him. But the financial toll of tests, medications, hospital visits, and daily expenses is growing unbearable. That’s why we’ve created this GoFundMe, to humbly ask for your help.
How You Can Help
Every single donation—no matter the size—goes directly toward John Paul’s care. Your support will:
- Fund his continued treatment and medications
- Cover hospital visits and emergency care
- Help the family manage daily needs while caring full-time for John Paul
Even if you’re unable to donate, sharing this page could help us reach someone who can. And most importantly, we ask that you please keep John Paul in your thoughts and prayers.
