Brandy's Housing&More Fund

Donation protected
My friend Brandy Morrison is a trans woman artist in her mid 30s. She is in a men’s prison in Oregon and is preparing for her release this May. Without financial support her only housing option is transitional housing for men which will continue her ongoing suffering where she is disrespected at her most basic level of her gender.

Brandy is working hard to prepare for a life outside but she has very little support. Her family rejects her gender identity and has all but disowned her. Brandy had a few belongings to support her post-prison life, but now believes that her family members have sold them out from under her. Brandy needs financial support upon her release because she has no current support and so she can find a place to live that is sympathetic to her circumstances and validates her identity.

Brandy has struggled with depression in part as a result of not being accepted by her family. In addition, throughout her prison experience, some staff and fellow inmates refuse to accept her gender and openly mock her, for example calling her ‘sir’ when they are aware she does not identify as male and that she has legally changed her name. Despite challenges to her mental health from such callous treatment and rejection by her bio family, Brandy has created many works of art during her time in prison.

Brandy is an artist. While in prison her work was shown at an ACLU fundraiser in Portland. Upon release she plans to continue creating art and is considering many ideas for making a living including selling her art and taking classes to become a certified car mechanic. She also one day hopes to undergo gender affirming surgery, but realizes that is a distant dream – first and foremost she needs money to survive. She is in touch with several LGTBQ organizations and hopes to volunteer with them when she is released.

I have been Brandy’s pen pal and friend for more than four years. I want to help her have a survival fund for when she is released. I hope this fund will help her with rent, utilities and food. Please join me to help a trans woman transition out of prison by donating to Brandy’s basic needs survival fund. If you are interested in viewing her art, which is for sale, please leave me a message on this GoFundMe.

Thank you for reading this. Please share with people who might be able to help Brandy. Thank you for doing what you can to make the world a better, kinder place that accepts and celebrates people for who they are.
