Help Brandon Beat Leukemia

Brandon Treft’s story: On Monday, February 10th Brandon made a trip to the doctor’s office after multiple days of severe headaches, fever, fatigue, and unusual bleeding from his gums. Bloodwork showed white blood cell counts were about 10x the normal level, and he was immediately admitted to the hospital where he was shockingly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Brandon is at St. Luke’s in Sioux City undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatments along with receiving platelets and plasma transfusions. Meanwhile, his wife, Jillian, is splitting her time between nights and days at the hospital, having to go back to work soon, and spending time with their beautiful children, Declan (7 y/o) and Mila (2y/o). Bear and Rufus are currently enjoying a getaway at Grandpa Paul and Grandma Nancy’s for the time being.

ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow with excess immature white blood cells. AML progresses rapidly, with myeloid cells interfering with the production of normal white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Treatment depends on the stage; including chemotherapy, other drug therapy, and bone marrow transplant. As of right now treatment will be 2 types of chemo given simultaneously, one will be given for 3 days straight and the other will be given 7 days continuously. After that 7th day there will be a waiting period of 7 days to let the chemo do its job and then on day 14, another bone marrow biopsy will be taken to see whether the cancer cells have been wiped out or if another round of chemo is needed. The short term prognosis is looking like at least 30 days in the hospital, best case scenario. Realistically, it will probably be closer to 60 if the second round of chemo is needed. The ending timeline will hinge on how well the initial rounds of chemo take effect and do their job. Once they get through that point, if chemo hasn’t worked, the next steps appear to be exploring bone marrow/stem cell transplant options.

As you can imagine, this will all likely be incredibly expensive, and we want Brandon to receive the best care available from the most qualified nurses, doctors, oncologists, and specialists. While his doctors are creating a treatment plan, we hope to take away some of the financial stress for them. So many of us have received the help, positivity and support from our dear friend in our own time of need and now he needs us to come together and show him he has an army in his corner!

To support Brandon and his family, please consider donating to, and/or sharing, our GoFundMe page that has been set up across your social media channels. All donations will be used for medical expenses, lost wages and miscellaneous expenses for his family as he will be unable to return to work while undergoing treatment. Any donation of any size is greatly appreciated, no matter what.

Thank you for your generosity and please know that they are extremely appreciative of you all and feel very loved from the outpouring of support and encouragement they have already received from texts, calls and Facebook! Here is to hoping for the best results moving forward!

*As a side note, cards are ok to be sent to St. Lukes, but please refrain from sending flowers or plants, as they are not allowed into areas where chemo is being administered.
