Help Brandon Fire Back! (Get it?)
Donation protected
Brandon's an incredible young man who has been through a terrible accident over the last few days. We as a family are putting together a GoFundMe to ask for your help to get him the resources he needs to get through this, get back on his feet, and focus on recovering instead of the distractions of the financial hardship.
I will not be posting any graphic photos of the burns or stab marks, they're pretty disgusting, but if anyone wants the updates on pictures to follow along in the recovery process feel free to reach out to me and I'll keep you in the loop. I will also be updating regularly HERE from now on, so keep your eyes peeled for important details and keeping tabs on how he's doing through this process. Anything at all helps, and thank you so much for everyone who's visited us or sent your prayers and kind words our way. It means the world to him and the family.

Brandon Lee Dearing:
As most of you know, Brandon owns his own woodworking and metal working business with our father, Steve Dearing. They make incredible products, spanning from furniture to beams to hand-forged ironwork. Everything is made authentically and meticulously by hand. One of Brandon's passions is forging world-class knives, part of the process including heating and pounding the metal into shape repeatedly for months at a time.
Here's a website for any of you who haven't seen their work yet!

What Happened:
Friday morning (November 8th), Brandon was forging one of his knives and had an accident where his back caught on fire due to the flames and heat from the forge he was next to. He had to rip off all layers of his clothes and threw them to the side to get the flames on his skin under control, which resulted in more than one fire catching in our woodworking shop.
Brandon, being the man that he is, was able to put out all of the fires by sprinting to the pond, crawling underneath barbed wire fences, and got the fires under control with buckets of water.
During this phase, he sprinted into the knife that he was working on that was in the vise (a mechanical clamp that holds the tool in place) and the knife pierced into his right arm, back out and into his chest. It was an 8-inch bowie knife he was sanding down, and you'd better believe there will be pictures of the knife to follow (maybe we'll hold a contest to see who gets to name the knife).
After spending a few hours at Cass County Regional in Harrisonville, they got him stitched up and transferred by ambulance to Research Medical Center, one of two burn units in Kansas City, to deal with the burns on his back. As it turns out, this burn unit is led by one of the top burn specialists in the area and we have been blessed by an amazing all-around staff! Any department that deals with the Dearing shenanigans deserves the highest commendation.
What's Happening Next:
He has first, second, and third degree burns on his back that require two surgeries to begin the healing process (one down, one to go). During the first, they removed all of the skin and tissue that's died and needed replacing, and lay cadaver tissue over the burns so that his body begins to accept new tissue before they take his own skin for the second graft.
The second surgery will be tomorrow (Wednesday, November 13th) and will involve taking skin from his leg and overlaying that over the burns so the true healing process can begin, as it's easier for the body to take to your own skin. They anticipate that this surgery will be painful, as removing your own live skin with live nerve endings is more painful than dealing with the dead tissue, so prayers for tomorrow's surgery would be appreciated! He'll remain in the burn unit for a few days afterwards, moving very little in the first three days so the skin doesn't move around, and once he's able to move they'll walk him through some therapy he needs to complete to heal the muscle and keep the skin's accepting process moving forward. He'll have a long road to recovery (about six months they think), but they're hoping he can be out of the burn unit by Monday.
What Brandon Needs:
Everyone has showered love on our family and it's been amazing to watch how respected Brandon is. I cannot thank everyone for their kind thoughts, prayers, visits, and food sent our way. THANK YOU.
But our family is putting together this GoFundMe to give Brandon some help during this time, as it's been a whirlwind dealing with the financial side of being in a specialized hospital unit, ambulance rides, surgeries, and most importantly (him being an entrepreneur), having to take so much time off of work. He will have a long recovery process to get fully back on his feet, and that is putting monetary stress on top of all of the other stresses he's had to deal with through this process.
We won't know the exact cost of everything until the medical bills start flowing in, but the doctors have been great about trying to help us to estimate what's to come. So I'll lay it out here for what we're hoping to raise for him to help get Brandon back on his feet! I can update it as we go once we know more.
$2,500 for the immediate costs for meeting his deductible for insurance (he uses Christian Medishare, so we're a little uncertain of the specifics of what will and will not be covered). I will update everyone more thoroughly once we know where we're at with it!
$5,000 for his after care and therapies, medicines, and doctor's visits post-surgeries. The creams and pain medicine used for burn treatments, we've been told, are rather expensive. and they're estimating 6 months of recovery time. Given the time of year that the accident has happened, some of his treatments and therapy will be spilling over into next year as well, so we're anticipating this being the bulk of his cost if the insurance works out like we've hoped.
$2,500 for him missing work. This covers one month of revenue lost being unable to work. There will be more than one month of time lost due to recovery, but this is what we'll start with to get him back on his feet during the worst of it.
Totaling out to $10,000. Again, anything anyone can give is wildly appreciated and it means more than you know. If anyone would like to contribute through gifts, your company, food for him, prayers, or words of encouragement, I know that he would love and keep these acts of kindness close to his heart. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
