Hello!
My name is Brad Glasgow and I have been hit pretty hard with medical issues, and unfortunately, I must ask for your help.
On the 4th of July, I was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer (called a Dieulafoy Lesion) and lost half my blood. During that hospital stay, a CT scan revealed a suspicious mass near my kidney.
That mass has been diagnosed as a liposarcoma - a rare cancer. And it is in a very bad spot, right up against my kidney. That is especially a problem for me as I was born with only one kidney.
On top of these issues, my vision has been deteriorating over the last year due to cataracts (posterior subcapsular). It has gotten to the point where I cannot drive at night, and I even have difficulty reading black text on a white background. The glare problem is compounded by significant astigmatism .
Because of the rarity of my cancer, I am seeking treatment at the University of Michigan, where they have a dedicated sarcoma center. Having clear vision will be essential for that 240 mile trip and for maintaining my independence.
My ophthalmologist can fix my vision through cataract surgery, beginning November 4th for the right eye and two weeks later for the left. This is also a chance to correct my astigmatism with toric intraocular lenses, which would greatly reduce glare and help me see clearly without strong glasses.
Unfortunately, these toric lenses are considered an upgrade and are not covered by insurance. They cost $2,300 per eye — a total of $4,600 out of pocket.
I hate asking for help, I really do. But my life has been turned upside down recently, and while my future is unknown, I desperately want to at least face it with clear vision.
If you can help, in any amount, I would be deeply grateful. If I somehow make more than the goal, the extra money will be used to support the expenses I will incur during my various treatments (car maintenance, loss of work, etc.).
