Help Bonus Action Launch - Indie Pub Fund

This is the most important thing I have ever written, and I want to start this off by saying thank you for reading it.

We started Bonus Action almost exactly one year ago as a place to write without restriction after layoffs separated a team that had become extremely close at a previous publication. We had no start up funds, no secret bank accounts or savings. We had no idea where the website would go, we just knew we wanted to be there together, doing what we loved doing. We didn't even know how to build or run a web page.

Despite the learning curve during that year, we reached an audience of nearly a million people. We traveled to conventions and met amazing people. We have published guides, reviews, features, and previews I could scarcely imagine making before we began our journey.

Every person at Bonus Action has worked for the last year on passion alone. We have only made enough money to keep overhead costs manageable, and yet we are publishing almost every day, covering indie and AAA games for the fans, by the fans. We are here doing it because we believe in this industry. We believe in the magic behind creativity. We believe in covering it with honesty, integrity, and good ethics.

Three weeks ago, I was laid off from my paying position. I have spent the past weeks thinking about what I will do next. I’ve refreshed my resume. I’ve looked at jobs on every website that lists them. But I don’t want to do any of those jobs. If I can’t be where I was before being laid off, the only place I want to be is Bonus Action. I want to be with my team. I want to keep helping these amazing writers create beautiful work.

Up until now, we haven’t asked for any startup support and have kept ads to the absolute minimum, but I find myself tackling a particularly difficult situation. I didn’t enter this world with any privileges. I have no means of just walking off someone else’s payroll to chase a dream.

But today, I am asking for a chance. The chance to bring you amazing work, to cover amazing games, and lead an amazing team. I want to have the chance to say yes to something beautiful and have the opportunity to see it become everything I know it can be.

They say kids born into poverty won’t ever get past the struggle without an outside hand and that dreams can grow past the boundaries of hearts and minds without a community to support them.

I am asking now, of my community, to let Bonus Action take flight.

This fundraiser will cover three months. It will give me twelve weeks to dedicate my entire person to this amazing group of people who have brought you full, old-school walkthroughs of Fields of Mistria, Magical Delicacy, REKA, Life is Strange, Lost Records, and so many other games. It will allow us to launch our YouTube channel, cover even more games, and do so as a fully independent publication.

I am so proud of this team. I could never have dreamed of the opportunities we’ve had since our inception, and I have never been more determined in my life to put my entire being into something.

I want to say yes to this dream, and I promise that anyone who supports us will be just as blown away by what we can do as I am every day when I look at my team’s hard work.
