Help Bon Fight Cancer
At 56 years old, Carmela "Bon" Farolan-Ferreira experienced some unusual symptoms last November 2020 in the midst of helping her parents through their own health issues. She had testing done in December and on January 9th of 2021, doctors removed a 30 cm (one foot) malignant mass from her abdomen after a 6 hour surgery.
She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Liposarcoma, a relatively rare kind of soft tissue cancer. Bon is now going through an initial round of cancer treatments with a possible additional surgery in February as the doctors don’t believe they were able to entirely remove the enormous cancerous tumor.
She’s having to make some tough decisions right now about treatment direction. She will be going through a slew of scans, tests and radiation and chemotherapy every three months for at least the next three years.
On top of caring for her parents, raising a daughter, working as a teacher and school administrator and dealing with her health issues, Bon has been rudely awakened by the staggering cost of her initial hospital bill last January, which was $25,000. And this is just the beginning of many expenses she needs to find a way to cover as her insurance only covers a small fraction. This will be a very expensive journey and fight against cancer for Bon.
But through it all, Bon continues to be positive and is trying to focus on doing the things she loves: journaling, writing, listening to music and podcasts, reading novels on her Kindle, and being surrounded by words of love, light, peace, prayers, and healing. 
She’s up for the fight of her life!
