Help Bolivian medical professionals fight Covid19!

UPDATE: From 2022, we (Standing Rivers) will use all donations to this gofundme to support our activities in Bolivia relating to healthcare and environmental donations, support for forest firefighters, as well as our campaigning and charitable activities in general.

UPDATE: June 8, 2020

Thanks to your solidarity and generosity, we have long since reached the target we needed ($US15000) for purchase of the personal protective equipment! The equipment we bought with this money is either already in Bolivia or on its way here, and so it doesn't make much sense to continue collecting for this purpose.

Therefore, we would like to let you know that from today June 8, all donations that you might make through this page will be directed to buying food supplies for our neighbors in need. Many of our brothers and sisters in Bolivia are going hungry due to quarantine meaning they can't go out to work, and despite a huge effort from citizens' organizations all over the country, and some support from the different levels of government, the situation continues to be very difficult for too many of us. Standing Rivers groups all over Bolivia continue to work day in and day out  to fight this crisis.

Ríos de Pie/Standing Rivers is asking you to help buy personal protective equipment against the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus for Bolivian doctors, nurses and support staff!

The world is facing a once-in-a-century challenge in coping with the Covid-19 pandemic, but, not all countries will be affected equally. Here in Bolivia, we face difficulties that aren’t shared with developed countries. Our healthcare system is basic, underfunded and ill-equipped, with only 19 medical centers equipped to accept Covid-19 patients. It’s also a sad fact that many Bolivians live in poverty, with around 1 out of 5 families not having piped water in their homes. Additionally, in the lowlands, our medical professionals have been fighting a dengue fever epidemic this past summer and so we already have a healthcare system in a state of semi-collapse. As a result, a study from the Catholic University of Chile estimates that there could be at least 30,000 deaths, out of our 11 million people, due to Covid-19 in the upcoming months.

So WE NEED YOUR HELP! Ríos de Pie/Standing Rivers is a youth civil society movement present throughout Bolivia. We have been talking to doctors and nurses from health centers in La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Potosí who have sent us lists of equipment that they are lacking. As such, we’re requesting donations to buy them the personal protective equipment they, as well as medical support and hospital cleaning staff, so need and deserve. THEY ARE OUR HEROES; we cannot let them fight this pandemic without the adequate equipment!

Any gifts you make will be fully accounted for. We will make available receipts and accounts of all the purchases we make so that you can feel comfortable that your donation is treated fully transparently.
