Last week, Fernando Bolio Sr. learned that the small growth under his lip that appeared a few months ago is malignant -- he has squamous cell carcinoma. This cancer is usually treatable when caught in the early stages, but unfortunately his tumor was assessed late due to the check-up being too costly at the time. Due to the delay, it may have had the chance to metastasize throughout the rest of his body. Fernando had surgery today, and we will learn about if and how far the cancer has spread in a week.
Fernando averages 60 hours a week in construction to provide for his family, but he will be unable to work for a minimum of 3 months or for as long as 8 months depending on if the cancer has spread. This will leave his family in a dire financial state that stacks on top of the existing financial burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of the Bolio family, friends of Fernando Jr. (Pomona ‘22) are currently fundraising to support his family with the costs of his recovery period, including but not limited to housing, food, physical therapy, and medicine.
If you know Fernando, you know that he is a hardworking (even working the day before his surgery), kind, and incredible individual. Sadly, he faced brain cancer and a stroke 10 years ago, and currently has Type-2 diabetes -- he is only 45 years old. He works countless hours to support his 5 sons, spouse, and mother at home, as well as his extended family who live in Mexico. Fernando is a community figure that has always been generous to those in need with the little money that he has. Please know that the Bolio family is extremely appreciative of any and all support during this sensitive time.
