BODHI IS HOME!!
Our baby boy is home with us and we are over the moon happy to have him back.
He is up on his feet but is restricted to small movements only a few times a day.
He will pretty much be confined to his crate for two weeks and then we can hopefully be dismissed of the cone. He will go back for bandage switches once a week and we will also get rehab done while we are there doing those.
He will need to be sedated for the bandage changes as the gashes on his legs are pretty severe. The road rash in his groin area is very uncomfortable for him and will take some serious time to heal. He is wearing a harness so that we can help lift him to his feet when he needs to use the bathroom.
He is currently on a 6 medication regimen that will need to be closely followed. He will likely be pretty loopy for the entirety of the 8 week healing process. After the 8 weeks, he should be cleared for walks longer than 5 minutes. After that, he should be pretty much off of most of his meds and we can work on the next 8 weeks.
So far, since being home, he has eaten a little food, taken three of his meds, drank a bunch of water, peed in his beloved yard, and sniffed the heck out of his brothers. We gave him a break from his cone while he was eating and he zonked out right after so we’re going to let him enjoy that time without it on while he’s sleeping.
He will need to sleep in his crate until he’s 100%, so Bryan and I will likely set our bed up next to him since he will need to be on the main floor to avoid stairs.
This is going to be a long road, and our vet visits are far from over, but the help we’ve received so far has brought us both to tears. We would NOT be able to do this without the help of our friends, family, coworkers, and also complete strangers.
The selflessness of all of you is truly inspiring✨
UPDATE:
Bodhi just got out of surgery! The surgeon said it went well and they were able to repair it with the plate and screws. He did have quite a bit of swelling but he said that can easily be managed with rest. The road rash on his other leg is not healing quite like they want, so we will need to keep it bandaged for a little while.
We can hopefully pick him up around 3:15pm tomorrow and he will have a rehabilitation appointment at 4pm.
If they can't wean him off of his pain meds through his IV then they will need to keep him another night.
Thank you to everyone who has sent us positive vibes, thoughts and prayers. We will need them continued as he heals❤️
UPDATE:
They were able to get Bodhi in to surgery today and he heads back in about an hour! Thank you all so much for your support in donating and/sharing this. It truly means the world to us.
Hi, our names are Bryan and Chezy, and this is about our dog Bodhi — our goofy, loving, 7-month-old Vizsla mix. He’s not just a dog, he’s part of our family.
On August 23rd, Bodhi was hit by a car. We rushed him to UW Veterinary Care in Madison, where the vets confirmed he has a broken femur in his back leg, a fractured rib, several lung contusions, and severe road rash on his other leg. Despite all of this, he’s alert, fighting, and showing us the same strong spirit he’s always had.
The vets have told us that the cost for his treatment and surgery will be $9,000–$12,000. Depending on how things progress, Bodhi may even face amputation of his back leg if repair isn’t possible. This accident came right on the heels of other large family expenses for our kids, and the timing couldn’t be worse. We’re not usually ones to ask for help, but right now we truly need it to make sure Bodhi gets the care he deserves. After care and recovery from either surgery will require time off work for both of us, driving to medical appointments, and rehabilitation.
On top of Bodhi’s medical bills, are Bryan’s. After Bodhi was hit, Bryan rushed to Bodhi’s side to try to carry him to safety. When he tried to pick him up, Bodhi bit him in a state of shock. Both of his hands were injured and required X-rays and stitches. While Chezy was at the ER vet with Bodhi, Bryan had to drive himself to the hospital to care for his wounds.
Bodhi is still just a puppy — he deserves the chance to grow up, run, play, and live a full, happy life with us, whether on four legs or three. Any support you can give, whether through a donation or by sharing his story, will make a huge difference in helping us get him the care he urgently needs.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read Bodhi’s story and for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️
