Help Bobby Temenak's Stroke Recovery Journey

Donation protected
Hi- My name is Amanda, I am Bobby Temenak's daughter and we need your help.

On April 22, 2024 my father drove from South Carolina up to Maryland for a family wedding. The very next day he suffered an Ischemic stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body, and was rushed to the emergency room at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda MD. Once admitted, we learned that his health insurance would not cover any part of his stay aside from the initial emergency room visit, as he was out of state. When we tried to have him discharged to return home to SC where he had coverage, the hospital refused because it was unsafe to transfer him so far before he was rehabilitated.

It was this moment when we realized that we were in trouble and the healthcare system was failing. We couldn't get help to get him out of the hospital to go home, bills were piling up, he was getting rejected from all available rehab centers, and the entire time he was sitting in the hospital bed at Suburban his body and his spirit were atrophying. And, on top of everything else, the doctors failed to notice his left arm falling out of alignment, which means before any rehab to regain control of his left arm, he will need an additional surgery.

Finally, after a month of waiting and a strongly worded letter to the Governor of South Carolina, my dad was approved immediately to move to Adventist health rehab center. The next month was full of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and cognitive therapy. It became clear that we would need to dissolve his business (Good Samaritan Services) as he cannot do the very physically demanding work anymore, and we would need help financially and physically when he returns home. Through a rigorous regimen of rehabilitation, my dad finally regained movement and strength in his left leg, and when he was discharged on June 19th he was able to stand and walk with some assistance for 10-15 feet.

For the past two months, he has been living with me in Maryland, and I have become his caregiver full time to help him in preparing to move back home to South Carolina, but progress is slow, and it has become apparent that he will not be able to return to his old lifestyle.

Here is where we need help. This has been a huge transition for my father and we are in need of help from his community. My father went from fully self-sufficient, independent, physically active business owner who was very active in his community and at his church to a disabled man who is unable to care for himself, and will not be able to work for the foreseeable future. We are looking to raise money to help my father with medical bills, transportation to treatments, monthly medications, caregiver services, help with food cost and other miscellaneous medical equipment needed to prepare his house for his return.

If you are not in a position to donate financially, we will also need help with the folowing

- Checking in on him (on the phone and in person) several times a week
- Help with rides to therapy and to church
- Picking up groceries, or bringing meals to him (as he is unable to cook with one hand)
- Taking his dog Bella for a walk or helping with yard maintenance

Thank you to everyone who has read this far, who has checked in on my father, and who is able to donate or to help him recover

We appreciate you more than you know.

Amanda (daughter), Robert (son) and Bobby Temenak (our father)
