Help Robert heal and rebuild

Hi. My name is Olga and I'm creating this Go Fund Me for my nephew Robert Marquez. Robert was home from his first year of college at University of the Pacific where he was majoring in Computer Science. On May 29th, 2024 he was riding his bike to the gym, like he had been doing every day since he got home, when he was hit by a driver who ran a red light. Robert was rushed to the hospital, but was in pretty bad shape. He suffered broken ribs, broken clavicle, broken vertebrae, contusions to his lungs and injuries to his brain. The injuries to his brain were pretty severe, but the doctors in the emergency room worked really hard to stabilize him. He had two different brain bleeds, a clot at the site of one of the brain bleeds and a lot of intracranial swelling. He had to undergo emergency surgery to relieve the pressure in his brain and remove the clot.

4 weeks into his healing he had a setback. He had a rebleed at the site of one of his previous bleeds that caused a large clot in his brain, as well as a new bleed in his brain. His doctors had to perform another surgery on his brain to remove the clot and attempt to relieve the swelling that was caused by the clot. Unfortunately, because of the severity of his injuries, Robert has been in a coma since the day he was injured.

Currently, Robert is in the ICCU at Kaweah Health Medical Center in Visalia, CA and has been for 57 days (as of this posting). He has stabilized enough that his care team is looking for a placement at a long term care facility. While we have been fortunate in that he is insured, we all know that our healthcare system is flawed, and there are expenses that will need to be paid for out of pocket. And, when he is moved to the long term care facility, there will be travel expenses that we as a family were not prepared for. There will also be a very long, difficult road for Robert to traverse once he wakes up. He will need extensive physical therapy and perhaps assistive devices to help him on his journey.

Robert is a strong, smart, kind, and caring young man who does his best to be the best version of himself everyday. Now Robert and his family need everyone’s help more than ever.
