Our brother Bob is fighting a battle. His battle began in January when he was taken to the hospital after a long night of not feeling well. There he learned he was bleeding internally, but doctors could not tell where the blood was originating from. During treatment, they discovered he had multiple masses in his esophagus, liver, and lungs. At that point, he was transferred to a hospital with a level 1 trauma center. We nearly lost him that night. He lost so much blood, but doctors were finally able to stop the hemorrhaging and stabilize him.
Over his 4 days in the ICU, doctors biopsied one of the masses and determined he has stage 4 esophageal cancer. His treatments to control the cancer and to stop it from growing began on Jan 31st when he started a series of chemo rounds.
Bob has had a lot of difficulty eating and has lost lots of weight. In March, he was not able to get any food down at all. We feared the worst when he was admitted to the hospital again. Tests revealed his esophagus was almost completely closed. The good news was that CT scans also showed that the chemo treatments were working to reduce the size of his masses. As the cancer cells died, scar tissue was formed, and that was blocking his esophagus. They did a procedure to put in a stent and miraculously he has been able to eat again.
We are thankful that Bob has health insurance, but there are many expenses it does not cover. We have started this Go Fund Me page to help him cover his medical and other expenses. Between the hospital stays and the cancer treatments, the medical expenses are stacking up. He has been able to work so far, but it is unclear how much longer he can continue as he is very weak and tired. If the cancer forces him to stop working, he will not only lose his income but also his medical insurance.
