Modern life in The United States calls for brave communal spaces in order to not just survive, but thrive. We are pack animals, and we were never intended to do anything all on our own. Right now in history, there are so many of us vulnerable to cruelty, and the antidote for that is deep care. In order to believe something is possible that seems to have obstacles built all around it, we often need someone else holding the vision of liberation for us, believing we can get there with the right supports, and then creating the conditions for those supports to gather.

Bloodroot Apothecary is a beacon of hope for Ypsilanti, Michigan and online worldwide. And just like we need Bloodroot to add to our resiliency, Bloodroot needs us back. Pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps is not even physically possible. Nor is healing in isolation. This is a plea for reciprocity, for us to break the toxic societal tendency to consume without offering, and to make sure the careworkers of our communities are revered for the hard work of love they are putting in overtime.

Every once in a while, a place will come along that anticipates our needs, draws the connections for us between body and mind and soul, and does this all in a way that is inviting and accessible. When we are fortunate enough to have this rare experience, we should not miss the opportunity to show gratitude and give back where able. If we want more culture that is counter cruelty, then we have to nurture that bravery in real time.

What will it take for the doors of Bloodroot Apothecary to stay open for the two years left on the current lease? And then, what will it take for Alex Crofoot to so deeply feel our support and appreciation that what she offers in return can expand for years beyond that?
