I never imagined that a short trip to Nigeria would leave such an imprint on my heart.

During my four day stay, I came face to face with a situation that shook me to my core—a little girl named Blessing's situation. Blessing was abandoned on a thin, worn mattress outside her grandmother’s home. Eight years old, partially paralysed, non-verbal, and completely dependent, she was left behind—discarded like she was nothing.

Who is Blessing?

Blessing is a beautiful child with piercing, almond-shaped eyes that hold an entire universe inside them. But she is trapped—unable to move, speak, or even ask for help.

Over a month ago, her mother—or someone from her family—left her outside her grandmother’s home and never came back. Why? Most likely because they had no means to care for a sick child in a country where medical care is a privilege, not a right.

Her grandmother, a kind but struggling woman, survives on a tiny income from sewing clothes, while dealing with her own health issue. She loves Blessing fiercely and wants to care for her, but she is overwhelmed, terrified, and without resources.

The Harsh Reality

- Blessing has no mobility, she cannot sit, stand, use her hands or walk.

- She is non-verbal, unable to express pain, hunger, or fear.

- She is doubly incontinent, meaning she has no control over her bodily functions.

- She is completely dependent, requiring 24/7 care.

- She has been left undiagnosed—her condition remains a mystery because her grandmother cannot afford even a basic hospital visit.

Right now, Blessing is suffering in silence.

She has never had access to a doctor who could diagnose her condition.

She has never been given a treatment plan to help improve her quality of life.
