My dad was recently diagnosed with colon cancer, a diagnosis that has turned our world upside down. He had been feeling unwell for some time, but if you know my dad, you know he is not someone who calls out sick. What we all believed was a lingering stomach bug turned out to be something far more serious.

After his symptoms continued, he was taken in for a CT scan, which revealed a large mass in his colon. Further procedures in the days that followed confirmed colon cancer. In the coming weeks, he will undergo multiple procedures to prepare for surgery to remove the mass. Once the mass is removed, doctors will assess whether the cancer has spread and determine if chemotherapy and radiation will be needed.

This journey requires traveling out of state for medical care. During this time, both my dad and my mom will be out of work so they can attend appointments, be present for procedures, and focus fully on his recovery. Along with the emotional weight of this diagnosis, they are now facing the financial strain of medical expenses, travel, gas, food, time away from home, and everyday bills.

Anyone who knows my parents knows the kind of people they are. They are the first to show up for others, the first to give, and the last to ask for help. They have spent their lives caring for family, friends, and their grandchildren—who adore their papa and need him here, healthy and strong.Now it is our turn to show up for them.
