Help Black Student Move From Racist Environment

Donation protected
Update Aug. 21/2020: 4/5 of my classes are online. I have to travel 4 hours to Atlanta to attend one class on exam days. I spoke to my professor about my situation and they kindly understood and are allowing me to miss days of class so I didn't have to use my time traveling back and forth from Valdosta to Atlanta. In addition to that, my school also refuses to lower tuition and/or remove many of the mandatory fees making it hard for me to pay off this semester easily. I know at this time, I won't receive the funds in time before school starts, but I still need help for next semester. Through all the go fund me donations and donations via cash app and PayPal, I have saved up $1k to go towards my housing for next semester and to help with my split payments for my $1k bill for the Fall 2020 Semester.

To viewer, sharer, and donator,

My name is Milan Sturgis and I'm a 19 year old college senior.

It is no secret, to the many people that know me, the racist environment I grew up in, in Valdosta Georgia. I have had to deal with my present neighbor breaking into my home to vandalize my house and write racial slurs over the walls, after having had terrorized our family for 14 years. Then after moving away and then moving back to my hometown, I continued to live in a violently racist environment. I got told I deserved to be lynched and was harassed by my classmates and peers, repeatedly.

I studied hard and graduated with my associates when I graduated from high school. This was my biggest accomplishment because that meant I could leave my hometown and work on myself. That has also allowed me to soon graduate from Georgia State University, in Atlanta, GA, with a B.A in Film and Media and a B.S in Psychology.

After all of the threats, the racism, and the disregard by the police in Valdosta towards police brutality and the hate crimes that have happened in Lowndes County/Valdosta Ga, I do not feel safe staying here for the rest of my college education. Because of Coronavirus, I had to leave my campus in Atlanta and come back home to Valdosta, with nowhere to work. My school has made no decreases in tuition, making it hard for me to just have to pay for housing for the FALL2020/SPRING2021 school year. Me being a broke and unemployed college student and having had donated most of my money to bail funding and others in need, which was not a smart move on my part and I should have planned for this, I am asking for any assistance to help pay for housing and school tuition for the next school year. I graduate next summer (hopefully) and anything to allow me to stay in Atlanta for the next school year will help!

Every donation counts and I am extremely appreciative of anyone who shares or donates.

Love, Milan Sturgis xx
