Dec 3rd Update: Goal reached!!!
TL;DR: Biscuit is a spaz and ran into a door, likely fracturing something in his skull, causing a bloody nasal discharge that has not been fixed for months due to the ambiguity of his diagnosis. We’re asking for help for his vet bills which have gone over $2500 at this point. Feel free to reach out to me or Johnny if you’d rather use Venmo/Paypal/Ca$h app/carrier pigeon.
Back in July, Biscuit ran full speed into a door that was covered with a sheet because he thought the door was open behind that sheet (our cheap mesh screen had ripped and the new one hadn’t arrived yet)… but the door wasn’t open. He ran into the door so hard that Johnny said it shook the house. He had the habit of bolting out the door of the spare room (a separate unit) to run back into the house, and I hadn’t considered he would try to run through the sheet without checking. Here’s a pic showing the space between the house and the outside room so you can see what I’m talking about:
Anyway, Biscuit, being the happy-go-lucky dog that he is, shook it off and started wagging his tail again while he waited for me to open the door. I decided that we should wait until the new mesh screen had arrived to let fresh air in and let the dogs have unfettered access to the backyard. So, I took the sheet down, closed the door, and didn’t think any more about it after that.
Cut to some weeks later, it’s the middle of August, and Biscuit has been sneezing and licking his nose more and more as time went on. I began to notice snot was coming out of his left nostril when he would sleep like this:
I didn’t make the connection that it could have been caused by the door incident and assumed it was because of allergies or something he sniffed, but it didn’t get better.
Eventually, I noticed blood on his slow feeding bowl and assumed it was from his bad teeth, but a few days later, there were blood droplets on the ground after I had given him a Kong with peanut butter, and I finally saw that the blood was coming from his nose. CW: bloody nose but I blurred it a little
Obviously, we were upset, and we took him to the North Beaverton Pet Hospital because they had an opening that day. $600 and no diagnosis later, we went home with Biscuit and some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills. The blood cleared up after the run of antibiotics was over, and I noticed there was less discharge of any kind, so I was hopeful that it was just an infection caused by a bad tooth abscess or something.
There was some discharge still, but the sneezing had stopped, and the snot was clear like in the above pic. It’s mid-September at this point, so you know how much time has passed. I had received a few quotes for dental care that ranged from $1000 to close to $3000, so I held off on that because we had almost maxed out our credit cards at this point just trying to get by with me in school and Johnny getting laid off then trying to get their own business going.
Well, about a month had passed, and, of course, the nasal discharge started getting worse again. It wasn’t clear anymore, but there was no blood at this point, so I luckily was able to get an appointment with Magnolia Animal Dentistry 3 days later because of a cancellation. Shoutout to the crew at Magnolia - very professional, welcoming, and I’ll just say it’s a great place to take your dog or cat for dental work if you’re queer and/or a feminist.
The initial cleaning, x-rays, anesthesia, etc., was around $600, and even though they couldn’t see any indications that the teeth would be the cause of the nasal discharge, they recommended 9 extractions which brought the total to $1900. The dental cleaning and extractions were long overdue (a vet said years ago there were teeth that needed to be removed), so I gave them the go-ahead, and by the time I came to pick him up, Biscuit had nine fewer teeth than he started the day with.
They had a “Pets of the Day” board that I decided to edit after I took a picture of it cuz I disagreed with their choices but of course, I’m biased.
Anyway, after another round of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory pills, and pain pills, the nasal discharge had slowed again, and I was hopeful that this was going to be the thing that was going to solve the problem.
It’s been over a week since the pills have run out, and he has been sneezing and dripping snot again like nothing ever happened. Then today, after I got home from picking up some groceries, I noticed Biscuit had blood coming out of his nose yet again.
So that brings us to now. We are asking for help from friends, family, and anyone who wants to help because at this point, we are at our limit. I don’t know how much information I should give in this very public GoFundMe, but if you know us and you have any questions, feel free to message either of us directly because I am willing to show any and all receipts, bank statements, or whatever else you want to see before donating.
We love Biscuit. Our dogs are family to us. I want what’s best for them short of giving them away to someone that’s more well off financially. I will sell everything we own before we give up our dogs, and if there’s anything that can be done to help them medically without them living with chronic pain or something, then I am going to do it.
I entered $3000 as a goal because of the charges we have put on the CC so far and because of the anticipated $500 minimum it’s going to take to get X-rays and anesthesia performed again so a veterinarian can hopefully finally figure out what is happening to our poor dog.
Thank you for your consideration and support - please feel free to share this with anyone you think might be in a position to help. ❤️ Also, I’m sorry this is so long.
