My friend Billy Childers is facing an uphill battle with a number of issues that have left him unable to work. Billy has worked hard his whole life and been gainfully employed for the majority of his life. He is unable to work.
In 2011, Billy was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS). GBS is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. The cause is unknown. The underlying mechanism involves an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves and damages their myelin insulation.
GBS attacked Billy’s extremities, rendering his hands and feet immobile. It took many months of medical help and rehabilitation before Billy could fully function as a human being again. For a while Billy’s life completely revolved around having nurses assist him with all his bodily functions. This was both humbling and humiliating. Billy often laid in bed and wondered if this was the end. Alone time in a hospital is both scary and emotionally devastating because it gives you time to face your fears and realize you are now living them.
Billy recovered from the GBS in about 6 months, but with side effects. He has neuropathy, which effects his legs and feet. Neuropathy is damage to your peripheral nerves. He is also experiencing memory loss. The disease can be fatal, and worse yet, it can return. The emotional scars remain. The only real thing that kept Billy going was his two kids with second wife, and his two children from his first wife.
Recently, in the last six months, Billy has begun to have severe headaches and his eyes will become very sensitive to light, to the point where he has to lay down and just let this “spell” pass.
In early May, Billy’s body froze and ceased to function, Billy had a seizure. Thank God two of his friends were close by and took him to the ER where they discovered a “mass” on his left temporal lobe. He stayed several days in the hospital and had a variety of tests run and he is still waiting for the results of the biopsy located in his brain.
Billy fell at work and tore his ACL and meniscus in his knee. Both knees are bad and in the past several weeks he has fallen a number of times and landed on his face.
With his injuries and emotional state, the Doctor has ordered him to not work and not to drive for the next six months. He has no money. He has applied for a Social Security disability and have yet to hear any decision on its status. He needs money for day to day living expenses, medicine, food and utilities. He may not be able to ever work again and the future for him is quite bleak at this point. His injuries and current state of health is not good. He’s been trying to turn everything around, but he’s only taken one step in a long long journey. He’s in a constant state of pain, and takes medications for a variety aliments, he needs a dozen prescriptions to get through the day. Billy has faith the Lord will help him through this troubled time.
Writing this description for Billy has been very difficult, He’s never asked for help of any kind his life, but he’s 57 years old and his body and mind have begun seriously failing and any type of support you could
give him would be greatly appreciated. The money will be used for medicine, food, utilities, gas, and doctor bills.
Please remember Billy in your heart and prayers
