A Future Without Seizures – A Life Changing Surgery.
Hi, Amber and Dain here, we’re reaching out with a parent’s heart full of hope, love, and urgency. Our 4-year-old son, Billy has been battling epilepsy for the last 3 years. When he was 15 months old, Billy was diagnosed with Focal Cortical Dysplasia. FCD is a rare brain disorder that causes a portion of the brain to not develop normally, resulting in refractory epilepsy that doesn’t respond to treatments and medications.
Despite trying countless medications, therapies, treatments and diets the seizures have only grown stronger, stealing away the childhood he deserves. Billy has upwards of 100 seizures a day. They have now grown so strong that he’s regressed to a state that he can no longer walk, talk or have any sort of childhood independence.
Now, there is one last chance to give Billy a seizure-free future—an intricate, life-changing brain surgery known as a hemispherectomy, where the half of his brain causing the seizures will be disconnected. It sounds drastic, but for children like Billy it can mean the difference between a lifetime of suffering and the chance to live, grow, and thrive. Billy’s surgery is scheduled for April 14th at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. He will need an extensive hospital stay for surgery and recovery followed by intensive therapy overseas to help him regain lost functions due to the loss of the right side of his brain. Therapy for Billy will be a lifelong journey.
The Challenge: A surgery that will cost $200,000 USD.
This surgery is our miracle, but it comes at a staggering cost for the procedure, hospital stay, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. Insurance will not cover this leaving us with an overwhelming financial burden. As parents, we would do anything to give our child a chance at a better life.
How You Can Help
We are asking for your help, whether it’s through donations, sharing this page, or sending prayers and love our way. Every dollar brings us closer to the goal, and every share spreads our story to someone who might be able to help.
Your support means the world to us and, more importantly, to Billy. With your generosity, we can give Billy a future full of possibility, free from the chains of seizures and medications.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
With love and gratitude,
Amber, Dain, Elliot, Charlie and Billy.
