We have lived in our home since 2004, and over the years, we have done our best to manage on a very low income. Both Teresa and I are 73 years old, and we have always tried to live simply, without any extravagant purchases or major changes to our home. We never imagined we would find ourselves in this situation, but we are now facing several urgent financial challenges that threaten our ability to stay in our home.

In July 2024, we were shocked to discover that we have a second mortgage on our house dating back to around 2011-2012. We had always believed this was included in our regular mortgage payments, just like our first mortgage. Unfortunately, it was not, and we only learned about it after years of no communication, letters, or calls. We are now working with a debt collector to resolve this, and the amount owed is significant. On top of this, our home insurance is requiring us to put a new roof on our house by December 2026, which is another large expense we simply cannot afford on our limited income.

Teresa is a two-time lung cancer survivor. In 2015, she had part of one lung removed and spent about 18 days in the hospital. It was a very difficult time for us. In 2019, she underwent radiation treatment—five days a week for six weeks—and, thankfully, she is currently NED (No Evidence of Disease). Her health remains a concern, and we rely on charity care for her medical needs, which adds to our worries. I am grateful to be healthy myself, so I can help care for her and support her through these challenges.

This is a very difficult and humbling position for us. We have always tried to be responsible and careful with our finances, and it hurts greatly to ask for help. We are deeply grateful for any support, as it will help us pay off the second mortgage and replace the roof, allowing us to stay secure in our home and focus on Teresa’s ongoing health needs.
