Help Bill Move Home and Support His Health Needs

Donation protected
As many of you have recently learned, our friend Bill Alkofer has developed ALS  (Lou Gehrig's disease), which sadly has ended his 42-year photojournalism career.

Bill has been living for several years in Long Beach, by modest means, eking out a living as a freelance photographer. Now that he can no longer lift his cameras, he must move to Minnesota where family will care for him. He doesn't really have the funds to do that well after divesting his material goods. So we'd like to help him get there safely and be set up with the medical aid he will likely need to function in his new environment.

As I've shared recently, I worked with Bill for several years at the Orange County Register. When I met him in 1990, he was employee of the year, the hardest working photographer on staff, the most driven to make photographs that had never been attempted. Years later, he left for work in the Midwest, for a while. After freelance opportunities dried up, he returned to work at the OC Register for a very small salary.

He lives for the story, and to raise others up in the process, particularly the marginalized, the quirky, and the different.
His love for photojournalism is always paired with a deep gratitude for the wonderful history he experienced and the opportunity to share the triumphs of common men and women.

Please consider if you can help Bill get home safely and comfortably. Any little bit helps.
