"I lost everything in one night, but my will to live and hope to heal keep me moving forward."

My name is Bilal Fathi Ahmad, a young Palestinian man from Gaza. I was born in 1999, and I am 26 years old. I graduated from the Faculty of Management and Finance, majoring in Accounting, at Al-Aqsa University. I was born and raised in this land I love—despite all the pain and hardship. Gaza was my home and refuge, and today I face the greatest challenge of my life.

My life before the war

I lived a simple life full of love and warmth. I grew up in the arms of a family that meant the world to me. My mother was the source of tenderness, filling our home with care and affection. My father was my first support; he taught me patience and strength with his smile despite the difficulties. My brother Mohammed was my companion in every moment—in laughter, in study, and in our small dreams.

Despite the siege, poverty, and harsh conditions in Gaza, we tried to live with dignity, to laugh from the heart, and to dream of a better future. We didn’t have much, but we had everything: we had each other.

The night everything changed

On December 22, 2023, I stepped out for a moment to charge my phone because the electricity was out again. While I was away, our house was bombed.

When I rushed back, the neighborhood was covered in smoke, the sounds of ambulances filled the air, and people were screaming. I asked a neighbor, and he told me that my house had been hit and my whole family was inside.

I collapsed from shock and lost consciousness. I woke up in the hospital, unable to believe what had happened. I searched for them among the injured but found no one.

I went to the morgue—and there was the horror. I recognized my mother by her small foot I used to kiss, my father by his large hand that always held me with love, and Mohammed from part of the shirt he was wearing that night.

All that remained of them were fragments, and I wasn’t even given a chance to say goodbye.

That night, I didn’t just lose my family—I lost everything: my life, my foundation, and my memories. To this day, I’m still trying to gather the shattered pieces of my soul.

Living through war, displacement, and fear

Since I lost my family, I’ve been living in a tent—displaced and surrounded by destruction. There’s no shelter from the cold or heat, and every day is a fight for survival. The air is filled with the sound of drones and bombs. The fear never leaves us.

I live with the pain of loss in a place where even mourning is dangerous. There is no rest, no safety, and no certainty. Life in the tents is harsh and humiliating, and the trauma of war follows me every moment.

❤️ My heart couldn’t take it

Since 2016, I have suffered from heart problems. I had a pacemaker implanted, despite the high cost in Gaza. But during the recent war, my condition worsened due to the lack of proper healthcare.

Doctors discovered that the pacemaker’s battery is almost depleted and that the device has shifted from its original place. This puts my life at serious risk.

I urgently need surgery to replace the pacemaker and its battery. Unfortunately, this surgery cannot be done in Gaza due to the lack of medical resources and equipment.

✈️ I can’t get treatment in Gaza and desperately need to travel

On January 30, 2025, I received an urgent medical referral to travel abroad for treatment, but I couldn’t leave because I have no money, no job, and no support.

The operation I need cannot be performed in Gaza, and any further delay could cost me my life.

The €30,000 will cover surgery, travel, and rebuilding my life after such loss."
