Help Bike Courier Pay Rent, Bills After Accident

Hello - my partner Zachary and I are helping a friend/co-worker raise funds after he was in an accident while working as a bike courier for CCC PDX a few days ago.

Jacob Randall Peltier, a bike courier at CCC PDX was hit head-on by an uninsured and unlicensed elderly driver while he was riding in the bike line while working a shift on January 1, 2023.

Jake was rushing to pick up a delivery after just completing his previous order. He was biking west on Rosa Parks Ln in the bike lane, heading towards Interstate Ave.

An elderly woman turning left out of the ARCO gas station was driving the wrong way in the bike lane while trying to get to a freeway on-ramp.

She hit Jake head-on, her car colliding directly with his bicycle and Jake himself. The impact sent Jake flying over the hood of her car onto the street and she proceeded to drag his bicycle for at least 20 feet before stopping.

This accident injured Jake, resulting in a concussion, whiplash, numerous bone contusions, two sprained wrists, two sprained knees, and widespread scrapes, cuts, and bruising. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening, but it is unclear exactly how long Jake will be out of work, but he will likely be recovering for several weeks and losing his $400/weekly wages while recovering which he needs to pay rent, bills, etc.

The accident also destroyed his bike, which has been his workhorse and main source of income since the pandemic began. Without his bike, Jake will be unable to return to work once his injuries are healed. It will cost roughly $1,000 to build a new bike and frame from scratch.

Since the elderly woman who hit him is uninsured and unlicensed, Jake does not want to press charges or cause hardship on her for this mistake and is looking for his community to offer support during this challenging time.
