Help Rebuild Black-Owned Business Big Easy Bar & Grill of East Austin After Electrical Fire.
15 years ago, Darold Gordon moved to Austin from New Orleans with his wife and daughters after Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, Darold opened a food truck in East Austin, serving po-boys and gumbo. After 8 years of owning and operating the food truck, Darold opened Big Easy Bar & Grill on East 12th. Big Easy has been a part of the East Austin community for 5 years now, serving Cajun food for lunch & dinner and hosting a variety of weekly events to bring the community together. Customers visiting for a po-boy or beer may be surprised by what event they may stumble upon: live blues on a Tuesday, poetry on a Wednesday, R&B on Thursdays… Big Easy is a place where artists of any background can feel welcome.
In the beginning of 2020, Darold began to feel happy with the pace of business. Not too soon after, COVID struck. Darold was forced to completely shut down Big Easy & lay off all staff. While he was already struggling to pay the bills, an even greater financial stab occurred: an electrical fire. On April 22nd, fire damaged the back half of the building. Darold is now having to rebuild the back half of Big Easy, install all new electrical wiring as well as new plumbing systems. The fire, in combination with the pains of COVID, has led to a huge financial stress for Darold.
Please consider contributing to Big Easy’s rebuild fund- Darold is expecting the rebuild itself to cost over $75,000. In addition, Big Easy continues to suffer from the repercussions of closing due to COVID.
