I’m creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my family and i’s good friend Betty, an 81-year-old woman who is going through an extremely difficult and vulnerable season of her life.

Over the last two years, Betty’s health has declined significantly. She had breast cancer surgery, followed by two additional surgeries related to her stomach, and she is still struggling with ongoing medical issues. Because of her health, she hasn’t been able to work or maintain the financial stability she once had.

During this time, she also lost a large portion of her savings, leaving her without the financial cushion she depended on.

As a result, Betty has fallen six months behind on rent, totaling $18,000, and her monthly rent of $2,950 is simply more than she can manage on her fixed income. She is a widowed woman with no children and is navigating this all on her own.

Betty’s home is incredibly important to her. She lives just five minutes from the hospital and her doctors, which is crucial given her health. Her neighborhood provides everything she needs close by, and it’s a safe place for her and her beloved dog, Cody. She also has a big backyard where Cody plays, and two parks within walking distance where she takes him when she’s able.

Because of COVID, her declining health, and the extremely high cost of living in California, finding an affordable new place to live has not been possible. Moving would be physically overwhelming for her, especially at 81 and with a house full of furniture she cannot pack or move alone.

She has tried renting a room to traveling nurses, which helps with smaller expenses, but it’s nowhere near enough to catch up on rent or prevent eviction.

Betty is trying her very best, but she cannot overcome this without help. My hope is to raise enough to cover her back rent so she can stay in her home—close to her medical care, in the environment she knows and depends on, and with her dog who is a source of comfort and companionship.
