Help Betty stay alive for her daughter

Let me tell you the story of my cousin Betty. My cousin Bertha Velazquez (Nicknamed Betty) has been a woman that has fought hard in life. She has always met her goals with honesty. She has been in the education field. She is a single mother that has dedicated her whole life entirely to her only and true love, “her daughter.” It hasn't been easy in these challenging days being a single mother to keep putting a roof and give her daughter an education. But destiny had something different for them; a dramatic change in their lives came in June 2020.

In June 2020, when she started bleeding, she was immediately taken to the emergency room, where doctors did all the necessary tests. A few days later, she received the doctor's call giving her the most devastating news she could receive: “Cervical and Uterus cancer” without metastasis. Betty received chemotherapy and radiation for one year. Radiations were more than 40 in two and a half months causing her to be burned and have blisters all over her body. She got a hysterectomy removing her uterus, cervix and ovaries, becoming cancer-free in July 2021.

The fight goes on...

Unfortunately, in April 2022, she started bleeding again but this time was a lot more than the first time and with excruciating pain in her lower abdomen and rectum, which immediately took her to the ER, where they, unfortunately, gave her bad news again; she had a massive blood clot in her bladder along with a sizable tumor that was causing her that great pain in the lower abdomen. Then she received the worst news again, Betty had to fight the beast again, “called cancer”, cervical cancer had returned and this time in a more aggressive way, now with metastasis in the stomach and left kidney damage. This time she had to undergo 4 chemotherapies, but each time it would be four different chemotherapies at the same time and a nephrostomy (an opening made between the kidney and the skin of the back that allows urine to drain from the kidney into a bag) that she has to carry and empty the bag every time she needs to go to the restroom.

Due to the location of the tumor in the bladder, in September 2022, she suffered another devastating news when the doctor told her that she would have to undergo another nephrostomy but now in her right kidney, leaving her even more disabled in her daily life.

Her nightmare continued; in October 2022, she began with uncontrollable pain in her belly and rectum that increased in intensity as the days passed, leaving her unable to have a bowel movement for days as a result, she was taken to the hospital again. She underwent several tests to find out what was the cause of these pains, resulting in: The position of the tumor in her bladder was pressing on the rectum, leaving no possibility for the stool to come out, to which the doctors had to make another drastic decision that would end up plunging Betty completely into total depression: now Betty had to undergo a colostomy where she will have to wear a bag connected to her intestine for life to be able to evacuate as well as the bags of her kidneys to be able to survive that condition that caused cancer.

After two nephrostomies and a colostomy, she will now have to continue this tremendous battle against cancer in total depression and be completely helpless financially.

Unfortunately, she is no longer able to work in the profession that she loves due to cancer that she now suffers from, causing very severe incontinence permanent severe pain due to the disease and the side effects of the treatment, and therefore, she is totally helpless financially and without health insurance.

She is now suffering from deep depression and anxiety from all of the above and having to go through losing her hair for the second time, which was devastating for her as well.

We all know Cancer is exorbitantly expensive, not only physically and mentally but also financially. While insurance covered a portion of the medical costs the first time but this second time, without a job and medical insurance, it's been very difficult for her. She still needs to pay her rent, for sure medical bills and hospital; she still needs to pay for all her personal expenses, medications, a lot of necessary things during and after the treatment, and many house expenses.

For this reason, we dare to create this fundraising on behalf of our loving cousin Betty Velazquez. We really appreciate from the bottom of our hearts your support and generosity during this difficult time. It's been a long and difficult journey for her. Les contare la historia de mi prima Betty. Mi prima Bertha Velázquez (Apodada Betty) ha sido una mujer emprendedora que ha luchado aguerridamente en la vida. Siempre ha tratado con honestidad de cumplir sus metas. Ella ha trabajado como educadora “maestra” y es madre soltera y ha dedicado su vida completamente a su gran y único amor “su hija”, no ha sido nada fácil para ella sola en estos tiempos tan difíciles de darle sustento, techo y escuela a su hija, pero como una leona ha sacado adelante a su hija hasta que el destino decidió dar un giro dramático en su vida para peor en Junio del 2020.

En Junio del 2020 Betty inesperadamente comenzó a sangrar y fue llevada inmediatamente a emergencias donde hicieron todos los estudios necesarios. A los pocos días, recibió la llamada del médico dándole la noticia más devastadora que podía recibir. Diagnostico: “Cáncer de Cuello Uterino” sin metástasis. Betty se sometió a tratamiento de quimioterapia por un año y recibiendo más de 40 radiaciones por dos meses y medio que le causaron quemaduras en su interior y causando ampollas por todo su cuerpo. Finalmente la sometieron a una histerectomía removiendo el útero, matriz, cuello uterino y ovarios, quedando libre de cáncer en Julio del 2021.

La lucha continua…

Desafortunadamente en abril del 2022 Betty comenzó nuevamente con un sangrado masivo y un dolor desgarrador en su abdomen bajo y recto, lo que la llevo inmediatamente a emergencias donde desgraciadamente descubrieron un coaguló de sangre enorme en su vejiga junto con un tumor de tamaño considerable que le estaba causando ese dolor tan fuerte. Ahora Betty tenía que volver a pelear con la bestia “llamado cáncer”, el cáncer cervicouterino había vuelto y esta vez de una manera más agresiva, ahora con metástasis en el estomago y con complicación en el riñón izquierdo. Ella ésta vez tuvo que someterse a 4 quimioterapias, pero cada vez serían cuatro quimioterapias diferentes al mismo tiempo y una nefrostomía (una abertura que se hace entre el riñón y la piel de la espalda que permite drenar la orina del riñón a una bolsa) que tiene que cargar y vaciar la bolsa cada vez que necesita ir al baño.

A causa de la ubicación del tumor en la vejiga, en Septiembre del 2022 nuevamente sufre otra noticia devastadora donde el doctor le dice que tendrá que someterse a otra nefrostomia pero ahora en su riñón derecho dejándola aun más discapacitada en su vida diaria.

Su pesadilla continuaba, en octubre 2022 ella comenzó con un dolor incontrolable en su vientre y en el recto que pasando los días fue aumentando su intensidad dejándola sin poder evacuar por días y como resultado fue llevada de emergencia nuevamente al hospital. Fue sometida a varios test para saber cuál era la causa de esos dolores, dando como resultado: La posición del tumor en su vejiga estaba presionando el recto dejando sin posibilidad a que las heces pudieran salir, a lo que los doctores tuvieron que tomar otra decisión drástica que terminaría por sumir completamente en la depresión total a Betty: ahora Betty tenía que ser sometida a una colostomía donde tendrá que llevar una bolsa conectada a su intestino de por vida para poder evacuar al igual que las bolsas de sus riñones para poder sobrevivir a esa afección que le ocasionó el cáncer.

Después de dos nefrectomías y la colostomía ahora ella tendrá que continuar esta tremenda batalla contra el cáncer en una depresión total y totalmente desamparada económicamente.

Desafortunadamente ella ya no pudo trabajar en la profesión que ella tanto amaba debido al cáncer y los daños colaterales que ahora padece, causándole incontinencia muy severa, dolores fuertes permanentes a causa de la enfermedad y de los efectos secundarios del tratamiento y por ende quedo totalmente desamparada económicamente y sin seguro medico.

Ella a ahora está sufriendo de una profunda depresión y ansiedad por todo lo anterior mencionado y por tener que pasar por la pérdida de su cabello por segunda vez lo cual fue desbastador para ella también.

Todos sabemos que el cáncer es exorbitantemente costoso, no solo física y mentalmente, sino también financieramente. Si bien el seguro cubrió una parte de los costos médicos la primera vez, pero esta segunda vez, sin trabajo ni seguro médico, ha sido muy difícil para ella. Todavía tiene que pagar la renta, muy seguramente las facturas médicas y de hospital y todavía tiene que pagar todos sus gastos personales, medicamentos, muchas cosas necesarias durante y después del tratamiento, muchos gastos de la casa etc.

Por esta razón nos atrevemos a crear esta recaudación de fondos en nombre de nuestra querida prima Betty Velázquez. Realmente apreciamos desde el fondo de nuestro corazón su apoyo y generosidad durante este momento difícil. Ha sido un viaje largo y difícil para ella. Cada centavo donado es muy apreciado.
