There are teachers who instruct. And then there is Bette Barnett. For almost a decade, Bette has devoted herself to sharing the rare and breathtaking metalsmithing practice of gold on steel with students and academics across the nation. She has built a national reputation and a devoted community of artists influenced by her teaching and her generosity to the field. Bette is a force of nature deserving of our collective love and support.
Vibrant in spirit and tireless in her dedication, Bette has moved through the smithing world with excitement, endless curiosity, and the joy of mystery. She brings an enthusiasm for witnessing her students adapt her teachings into art forms uniquely their own. Her students don’t just learn technique from Bette. They receive the gift of her heart, her friendship, and her unending curiosity of what this art form can become.
Last week, while teaching in Washington D.C., Bette took a fall and fractured her femur and hip. She is post-surgery and recovering far from her San Diego home. She faces rehabilitation and real financial needs. These include medical expenses not covered by insurance, the care of her beloved dogs, and the many unknowns that come with a serious injury far from home.
Bette would never ask for this. So we are asking for her. This is what community is for. Every contribution is a way of saying we see you, we love you, and we are here. Please donate what you can and share this page with every artist and friend whose life Bette has touched or who might want to help. Let’s help Bette heal, have her feel the love and of course, help bring her home. Donate. Share. Show up. For Bette. For all of us.
