BEST PRACTICE

WE’VE REACHED OUR GOAL, BUT ARE STILL ACCEPTING CONTRIBUTIONS. The cost of running Best Practice doesn’t stop with the build out of our new space - extra funding will help pay for costs associated with future programming (and, inevitably, unforeseen construction costs). THANK YOU!!!!!

BEST PRACTICE is moving!!!

We are very excited about this new development - your support and enthusiasm have given us confidence to take this leap. Our time on Kearney Avenue was formative and while we are sad to leave, many of the limitations we encountered there will be lifted in our new location at Bread & Salt! We are feeling really fortunate and are very much looking forward to opening doors in the same neighborhood starting this May with an exhibition of the work of Los Angeles-based 3B Collective!

We're grateful to the folks at Bread & Salt for welcoming us so quickly and warmly. We're eager to join the vibrant community of art institutions and artists already there.

We have a big ask: we need your help! We need to raise $7,000.

Our monthly Patreon contributors have been instrumental in our efforts to help fund artist honorariums, shipping costs, and A/V purchases - THANK YOU!!! However, this time our ambition is a bit beyond our current donations and our own wallets, our only funding-sources at the moment. We have big plans to help shape the space into our own. Please help by making a one-time donation to accomplish the re-modeling work to get us up and running.

Some of the work we plan to accomplish with a budget of $7,000: electrical improvements, lighting installation, building new walls and restoring existing walls (plastering, drywall, and painting), restoring the original bread-factory tile flooring, exterior paint and lighting, gravel pathway, and a custom exterior door.

While most of the labor will be provided by us (and a small group of friends), some hired professional help will be needed, including an electrician and a concrete cutter, who will be hired to cut a huge doorway in the concrete block wall, creating access to the established garden along Julian Avenue - we imagine our receptions and events spilling into the garden and sidewalk much like they would at Kearney Avenue. We love that. We miss that.

In the meantime - and in the spirit of how we've run Best Practice all along - we'll make do with what we have while we have it. While the space build-out will happen gradually throughout the first few weeks and months, we'll still plan to welcome you to view our programming as originally planned at the new space beginning next month with Oscar Magallanes and 3B Collective, and continuing with Cristobal Gracia, Alida Cervantes, and Cognate Collective to finish out 2021.

Thank you in advance for anything you can send our way to make this happen. We'll look forward to tapping beers together in celebration of this next step.

Hugs,
Allie + Joe
BEST PRACTICE

p.s. If we haven’t convinced you yet, here’s why we think spaces like BEST PRACTICE are important to support: We started BEST PRACTICE almost five years ago because we wanted a space like it for our city. The success of BEST PRACTICE so far owes much to the support of the community and those who have contributed their art, ideas, labor, and money. We hope you’ve enjoyed what we’ve done so far and will help us in this next step.

BEST PRACTICE was founded by Joe Yorty and Allie Mundt in 2016.

Situated in the historic Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego, BEST PRACTICE is a not-for-profit art gallery that promotes artists and curators whose work stimulates discourse. Our programming is rooted in the belief that compelling art poses more questions than answers, and that dignity, diversity, and equity are crucial to this commitment.

For its first two years, BEST PRACTICE existed at two locations in San Diego - within an institutional glass-enclosed bulletin board housed within the Department of Art, Architecture + Art History at the University of San Diego, and on a Sony Trinitron video monitor installed at Helmuth Projects which screened video works to the street around the clock. In 2019, BEST PRACTICE opened its first gallery space on Kearney Avenue in Logan Heights where more than a dozen exhibitions and events took place. BEST PRACTICE relocated three city blocks in 2021 to its current space at Bread & Salt at 1955 Julian Avenue.
