UPDATE:
After a month of healing, im happy to update that Beryl has cashed in one of her nine lives to become a little miracle.
Not only did she escape the coyote that crushed her pelvis and bear crawled her way home, but she has survived several pain treatments, stitches, and antibiotics and is walking again!
The vet wasn't sure if she would ever get movement back in her back legs, but she is proving everyone wrong this Christmas and is walking and running like the rest of her family! She even got back to jumping on the bed! The vet will want another check up in 3 months to monitor her progress- but we are all very pleased and grateful for her recovery.
Thank you to everyone who donated and thank you to anyone who still wants to donate. We are very thankful for this tiny Christmas miracle.
...
Hello everyone!
As some of you know, over the last year we have been working on feeding, fixing, and rehoming a large feral cat colony that moved in after Hurricane Helene. While much progress has been made with successful adoptions and fixings, we have hit a critical stage.
Yesterday, November 6th, one of the cats Beryl was attacked by a coyote. She has survived the initial incident, but is paralyzed from the waist down and is currently racking up hospital bills. The emergency vet the night of charged us 400$ for an incorrect diagnostic and medicine, and didn't even clean her wounds. Our regular vet, which see saw today, was able to diagnose clearly the coyote attack, clean her wounds, and give her some medicine for treatment. Beryl is still fighting and purring, and will be seen again on Tuesday for a follow up for quality of life. Sadly, between the two visits her vet bill is already over 1k. We are unsure if she will survive the treatment, but if she is fighting so are we.
Beryl is one of over 16 cats we are caring for. This number reflects the cats we have tried to keep inside, socialize, feed and fix (lovingly dubbed semi-feral for their demands for cuddles). There are more on the property that need TNRs. Shelters are full, and we are on long wait lists to get them seen. When we reach out for help, the shelters emphasize personal fund raising as their resources are stretched thin.
So we are here today for some good old fashioned community fundraising. Proceeds of this bench mark will go primarily into funding Beryl's hospital bill. Stretch goals will fund cat essentials such as food, litter, and fixing appointments.
Anything helps. We're been doing it all out of pocket so far but have hit our breaking point. And with the additional risk of a coyote nearby it puts many of the cats in danger. We keep as many inside as possible, but these known escape artists easily overwhelm doorways and sneak outside.
Once again proceeds will go to (in order of need)
- Vet bills for Beryl
- Vet bills for TNRs and fixing
- Food
- Litter
- Cleaning supplies
- Flea treatments
They are all sweet, lovely cats trying their best to survive. The world is harsh, but we don't have to be.
