My name is Bernadette, and I’m a 43-year-old mom of three loving kids. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 tongue cancer that spread to my lymph nodes. I went through every treatment available—chemo, radiation, and countless appointments. After finally finishing treatment, I was hopeful for a fresh start, but as I was getting my mouth fixed from the effects of cancer, I developed osteoradionecrosis of my jaw. This meant I needed almost my entire jaw rebuilt, using bone from my leg.

Now, I’m facing a long road to recovery. I have to learn to walk and talk again, and every day brings new challenges. I’ve been out of work for months, and my boss let me go because of how long I’ll be recovering. I don’t have insurance or state assistance, and my monthly food costs are high because I rely on a feeding tube. On top of that, I have ongoing medical treatments, physical therapy, and home health care, all while trying to keep up with regular bills and provide for my kids.
