Help Bentley Make it Home
Donation protected
We adopted Bentley from the Humane Society on Weds Jan 26, 2022 after having to help our nearly 16 year old dog, Stella, cross the rainbow bridge just a couple weeks ago.
A week to the day after bringing Bentley home, I took him on our regular walk around the pond after work. While walking, we passed two young girls walking what looked like a brown brindle pit bull or bully mix. When we were about 12’ from passing, the pit charged Bentley for no reason - it lunged and ripped the leash right out of the girl’s (whose parents clearly should never have let walk an 80-90lb dog she had zero control over), and attacked Bentley. It mauled him and thrashed him and threw him around like a doll while I desperately tried to get them apart, screaming, with its owners doing nothing. When I finally got it to loosen its jaws and drop Bentley, the girls took off with the dog while I tried to care for Bentley and screamed for help. Thankfully some other neighbors heard my screams and helped me get him to the emergency vet. This dog ripped open my 12 week old baby. He had over 4 inches of intestines literally hanging out of his tiny little body, as well as many other deep lacerations. His colon was punctured and several inches of intestines may or may not be salvageable. He has deep gashes across much of his body, and quite a bit of other trauma. Despite that, he is such a little trooper and is still the sweetest little guy.
The first night at the vet cost us $6500, the 2nd day is $4,000+ more, and we’re not sure how many more days of intensive care he will need at this point. He is just a tiny little baby, who is soo sweet, and didn’t deserve any of this. Especially at such a young age and completely unprovoked.
The apartment complex was notified - their response was “well, at this point we’re just working up an incident report”. I asked them to find the dogs owner, send out an email to residents asking the owner to come forward, or for a neighbor to let them know if they know who the owner is, and notify residents of an aggressive dog in the complex, and their response was “the company has decided to keep this private”. We called the police who directed us to animal control. They were supposed to come out and take a report… they never showed, even after several phone calls.
So, we’re left to try and handle this on our own. We are trying to find the responsible person ourselves, so we can get them to pay for the damage their dangerous dog has caused, but in the meantime the ER vet bills are rapidly accumulating, and we could really use any help anyone could spare in the meantime. (Obviously if we’re able to find the owner and recoup the money, we will repay anyone who was generous enough to donate.)
If you have the means and would like to help us give little Bentley the best chance at pulling through this, it would mean so much to us, and we deeply appreciate anything you’re able to do; your thoughts and prayers would mean the absolute world to us. Thank you so much for reading and for keeping this little guy strong in your thoughts ❤️
