I met Benon in the pouring rain, out the front of his home, down on his knees hammering rocks into aggregates just to earn a small income.

Benon is only 40 years old. Five years ago, after a sudden and severe case of cerebral malaria, both of his legs were amputated below the knees. Within just four months, his life changed forever.

Now, he literally walks on his knees.

The terrain where he lives is rough, rocky and often thick with mud. Every single step is painful. His knees are calloused and scarred from dragging himself across unforgiving ground. But he has no choice. If he doesn’t work, he (and the people he supports) go without food. So each day, he pulls himself up and goes out to hammer rocks.

He was once given prosthetic legs and crutches, but one of them snapped. Without them, life is unimaginably hard.

I am attempting to raise $1,100 AUD to provide Benon with new prosthetic legs. He will be measured, the legs will be custom-made, and he will receive two weeks of training to safely learn how to use them with crutches before returning home.
