Meet “Benny” — a sweet dog who showed up in our court almost two weeks ago on Monday, 3/2/26, and quickly stole our hearts.
We don’t know his real name, but we’ve been calling him Benny while we try to figure out his story. He's a male German Shepherd, not neutered. We think he is about 2-3 years old based on the appearance of his teeth and gums. When we first saw him wandering the neighborhood, he was wearing a dark blue collar but no tags or ID. He was incredibly shaken up but was quick to warm up to us and followed us home. We were more than happy to take him in while trying to track down his owner. We know how traumatizing shelters can be for some animals.
Benny is incredibly gentle, affectionate, and playful. He loves to cuddle, gives lots of kisses, and has been getting along wonderfully with our two dogs. His personality is calm, loving, and trusting — the kind of dog who just wants to be close to people. He is definitely what you’d call a "velcro dog" and wants to be near us every possible second. He has grown especially close to our big puppy, Stella. They've been inseparable since the first day and Benny will cry for her if they are separated even for a moment.
After taking him in, we noticed Benny was limping and wasn't putting weight on his left hind leg. We originally found him climbing around in our neighbors shrubs and someone else had previously reported seeing him out on a golf course during one of the worst storms our area has ever seen :( It's hard to imagine what he may have been through but honestly he's lucky to be alive.
We don’t know yet whether it’s a sprain, ligament injury, or something more serious, but it's progressively gotten worse over the last few weeks despite limiting almost all physical activity. We did contact a few local shelters in hopes of getting him some immediate help but they were completely full and unable to take him in. He clearly needs to see a vet at this point but we are really in need of some community help with all the expenses.
On top of exam costs and medications, he will most likely need to update all his vaccinations and maybe get "fixed" depending on his age and what the vet recommends. With these types of injuries there's also a strong possibility he may need a X-ray or even surgery but right now our biggest priority is getting the diagnostic exam and X-rays so we know what Benny is dealing with.
We have truly been doing everything we can to find his family. We took him to our local vet to check for a microchip, and it turns out he was registered, but was far from home. Despite numerous calls and messages, we have had zero luck getting in touch with the owner. We've been active online, posting on PawBoost, NextDoor, Facebook, etc. and even drove around the neighborhood in search of anyone who might recognize him. It's hard to imagine that anyone could abandon such a sweet dog, but we have gotten nothing but dead ends at every turn.
In the meantime, we are happy to give Benny a loving home while we continue trying to locate his owners. We are strongly considering adopting Mr. Benny ourselves but due to a recent job layoff, we would likely need even more financial help with accommodations like fencing, training, pet-sitting, etc.. Right now, we’re focused on potential veterinary costs and getting Benny the care he needs to get back on all fours.
If you recognize this dog or know who he might belong to, please reach out. And if you’re able to help support Benny’s vet care in any way — even sharing this post — it would mean so much.
He’s already shown us what a wonderful dog he is, and we just want to make sure he gets the care he needs and the safe future he deserves. ❤️
Every donation — even $5 or $10 — helps us get closer to getting him the care he needs.
Thank you for helping this sweet boy.
