Hi, my name is Nick, and I’m asking for help for my dog Benny — my “soul doggie” — who is fighting through a long recovery after a terrifying and violent dog attack.

On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Benny was attacked by a stray pitbull that had been wandering our neighborhood for several days without a leash or tags. When my wife was walking him and crossed our alleyway, the dog suddenly appeared from a pile of trash and immediately attacked.

The attack was brutal. The dog repeatedly bit and locked onto Benny multiple times. My wife tried desperately to pull the dog off, but each time she managed to free him, it would latch onto another area. After several attacks, she was finally able to scoop Benny into her arms and run to our front door. The dog, covered in blood, chased her and tried to force its way inside, destroying our screen door while attempting to get back to him.

Police responded and captured the animal, but the damage to Benny had already been done.

Benny survived — and we are incredibly grateful for that — but he suffered severe injuries. He has more than 20 puncture wounds and multiple surgical drains placed to prevent infection. His recovery will take time, careful wound care, follow-up veterinary visits, and ongoing treatment to ensure he heals properly and safely.

Right now, Benny needs continued medical care including:

Follow-up veterinary visits to safely remove surgical drains and stitches

Dental treatment from injuries sustained during the attack

Ongoing wound care and monitoring to prevent infection

Medical supplies such as gauze, wraps, saline, and bandaging materials

Surgical recovery onesies, puppy pads, and protective supplies while he heals

Physical therapy and restricted recovery support as he regains strength

We already faced a large emergency vet bill just to save his life, and the recovery phase is just starting and proving just as challenging.

My wife is currently pregnant and has a history of high-risk pregnancies, which means she is unable to work right now. I am a full-time student working gig and handyman jobs whenever possible while finishing school, but this emergency came at a time when finances are already stretched extremely thin.

Benny is family. He’s been by my side through some of the hardest parts of my life, and the thought of losing him to an infection or complication that could be prevented with proper care is heartbreaking. I want to make sure he receives the professional treatment he needs instead of being forced into unsafe at-home care simply because of financial limitations.

He still has a long road ahead, but we are thankful every day that he is alive.
