Give Benji a Healing Hand

This weekend, Benji was camping with a group of friends in Vermont. They were climbing trees when the branch Benji was on broke. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center with many injuries. Unfortunately, he has no medical insurance, and because he is now a resident of New York, Amanda's homeowners insurance cannot help.

Amanda and Mia drove through the night to be with him and are staying in a hotel close to the hospital. When they arrived, they said he had a small brain bleed, a broken wrist in several places, several broken ribs, a small fracture in a section of the spine, but no nerve damage, multiple lacerations on the left kidney, trauma to the ureter, and a small portion of the left lung has collapsed. He is improving daily but is still in ICU while they continue to update their findings and determine whether surgeries will be needed.

As of this morning, the trauma team gave us a more complete update with good news. Benji has no rib fractures, just very bruised lungs and, of course, the one with the hole in it, which is stable and expected to heal on its own. They have him doing breathing exercises.

The orthopedic team decided the T1 is an old injury, so they cleared him and removed the collar.

He has a left facial fracture that is not displaced and will heal on its own. This was a new finding to us.

Benji's kidney blood work worsened through the night, but his last test showed improvement this morning. There is blood around the kidney and a little bit of urine leaking into the area, but it is stable and contained to the area, which is good. Another CT scan will be done in 72 hours to recheck those fluids and maybe another couple of days before they determine whether or not it will heal on its own or need surgery.

His wrist is broken in several places and stable for now. It will need casting in a couple of weeks. Surgery is yet to be determined.

Benji has been more alert and talkative this morning, and he is glad to be cleared of the neck collar and able to sit up. He brushed his teeth and has finally been cleared to drink water. To be expected, he is just beginning to realize the impact of his fall and is super thankful Amanda and Mia are there with him.

When he should be starting to build his financial future at 21, Benji is now facing the medical bills piling up and his inability to work. Please consider donating $25 to help off-set his medical bills.
