My father, Benjamin Reyna, is a respected business owner who has lived in Charleston, South Carolina for over 20 years. He is a legal U.S. resident, a hardworking man, and a proud member of our Hispanic community. But now, he’s being used as a political scapegoat.

Recently, government agencies raided his business and falsely labeled him as both an “illegal immigrant” and a “cartel member.” These are blatant lies, spread by a source who had no proof — yet law enforcement agencies promoted these claims across social media as fact. They pre-convicted him in the public eye, risking everything he’s built for the sake of political points.

To make matters worse, the governor of South Carolina stood at a press conference, grinning and applauding, celebrating this baseless attack — all in the name of courting favor with Donald Trump and feeding racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric.

This wasn’t justice. This was a photo op. And now my father is paying the price.

Because of their reckless actions, my father’s life and reputation are now in danger. These lies have not only humiliated him publicly but also created serious safety concerns for our family. People are even trying to turn the Hispanic community against him, blaming him for the raid — when the real blame lies with the government’s hateful, divisive messaging.

Benjamin is now being held on an immigration hold, despite the fact that no federal charges have been filed against him. There is no clear reason for this hold, and yet he remains detained, caught in a system that values fearmongering over facts.

Recientemente, agencias del gobierno allanaron su negocio y lo etiquetaron falsamente como “inmigrante ilegal” y “miembro de un cartel.” Estas son mentiras descaradas, difundidas por una fuente sin pruebas, y luego compartidas por agencias oficiales en redes sociales como si fueran hechos confirmados. Lo condenaron públicamente sin juicio, todo para ganar puntos políticos.

Para colmo, el gobernador de Carolina del Sur apareció en una conferencia de prensa, sonriendo y aplaudiendo, celebrando este ataque sin fundamentos — todo con la intención de ganarse el favor de Donald Trump y promover una retórica racista y antiinmigrante.

Esto no fue justicia. Fue un espectáculo mediático. Y ahora mi padre está pagando las consecuencias.

Por culpa de estas acciones irresponsables, la vida y la reputación de mi padre están en peligro. Estas mentiras no solo lo han humillado públicamente, sino que también han generado preocupaciones reales de seguridad para nuestra familia. Incluso hay personas intentando dividir a la comunidad hispana, culpándolo a él por el operativo — cuando en realidad, la culpa es de un gobierno que alimenta el odio y la desinformación.

Actualmente, Benjamín está detenido bajo una retención migratoria, a pesar de que no se le han presentado cargos federales. No hay razón clara para esta detención, y sin embargo, sigue privado de su libertad, atrapado en un sistema que prefiere sembrar miedo en lugar de buscar la verdad.
