Benjamin and Renee are the kind of people who light up a room. They are warm, giving, and full of love for their three children, two of whom live at home and for life itself. But behind their smiles, they both live with serious chronic health conditions, including rare bleeding disorders that require ongoing treatment and care. Renee also battles Lupus, which prevents her from working.

Benjamin has been the family’s provider, but recently he was forced to stop working due to a required “washout” period while switching medications for his hemophilia. His employer, citing liability concerns, did not allow him to work during this transition—and ultimately decided not to bring him back at all.

As Benjamin began searching for new work, he was struck with another health emergency. He experienced severe pain, and after multiple ER and hospital visits, doctors determined his gallbladder needed to be removed. Due to the risks associated with his hemophilia, local and regional hospitals refused to perform the surgery. He was finally medevaced from Alaska to Seattle for specialized care.

Renee was able to travel with him as his medical escort and advocate, but this has created even more financial strain. She now finds herself stuck in Seattle with no money for essentials, uncertainty about how to return home, and no idea how their family will survive the weeks ahead.
