My name is Benjamin Bevel. My wife Sara and I had a dream after retirement to have a summer home in the mountains. A place we could spend the summer and for fifteen years, we had that to enjoy. Around June 1st, a forest fire, the Trout Fire, started to our northwest above Silver City, Grant County, but never in our wildest dreams thought it would affect our place in paradise, in the Gila National Forest. How wrong we were. We went to town for supplies on June the 14th and were evacuated the next day. Over $500 was spent on necessary supplies in food, maintenance supplies, gas and propane for our refrigerators none of it would ever be used. For six days we slept on the floor of a friend's place. Got food and drinks at the Red Cross. Boarded our dogs and cats at the Humane Society where we went every day to care for them and offer assistance in any way we could. We begged the sheriff's department to let us go in and retrieve things, care for our food supplies, assist in fire prevention efforts with no success. They finally called and verified the loss of our place and would provide an escort to view the damage. It was heart breaking and plunged us into total despair. We had no insurance on our home, contents, out buildings, vehicles, generators or anything else it took to maintain such a place, off grid, isolated and the best that life could offer, an estimated $300,000 loss. No company would insure us. We knew that early into the project but was willing to take the gamble that the forest service would do everything possible to protect our place, which at one time was their total objective. We are very lucky to have a place in Tucson Arizona to retreat to but has not alleviated our loss and future in a place we dreamed of. We don't sleep at night. Sometimes display anger for no reason. Shed a tear at a remembrance. Isolate or even insolate ourselves to others. I want to rebuild in that vicinity. A place easier to get to. More able to protect against disaster. A place for my dogs to run free in a contained yard. Enjoy the pines, high country, cool days and cooler nights. Nothing will ever replace what we had. I'm too old to start over again and don't have the financial means. If God is willing, we will have a place we can enjoy again.
